I have a Hotpoint washing machine, model number: WML720. When I try to set the machine away on any program, the door locks, the machine clicks several times and then the door unlocks again. I have tried all of the programs but I just get the same thing happening every time. Does anyone know what could be causing this and is it something that I could fix my self? Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me.

Check the motor carbon brushes and motor connection plug for loose contacts.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I have removed the motor and I have taken out the carbon brushes but on inspection there seems to be quite a bit of carbon left on them. Could they still need replacing or would there be no carbon at all left on badly worn ones?

You need to examine the ends of the carbon brushes and also the commutator that the brushes rub against.

The ends of both brushes should be smooth and shiny, if one is pitted or has a charcoal like appearance then they need changing, also the comm should appear smooth and clean, not scarred or discoloured.

Post a pic of the displaced brushes and we could soon tell.

Also worth checking the wiring to the door lock as well, flimsy connections which often burn out. 🙁
