Hotpoint BWD 129 – stuck in cycle

I have a Hotpoint BWD 129 which has just developed a problem and I’m looking for advice on what the fault may be, I first noticed the problem when the wash cycle had been in progress for 9 hours, I cancelled the cycle and selected drain which had an unusual noise.

I have opened the front drain, removed the pump and cleaned the pipes through to find a couple of hair clips – after reassembly on all subsequent test runs it drains normally.

However on running a full cycle it remains in wash and will not progress on to the rinse section. I can cancel this and select drain, which will successfully drain and finish. I can manually select rinse and it will – rinse, drain and dry and then finish.

I have run the wash cycle 6 times now and each time it has remained in wash cycle and not progressed. (On 2 occasions I have had the following light pattern and the wash cycle has halted). After all of these events cancelling the cycle and manually choosing drain and rinse will complete the wash cycle.

[Super wash – Quick wash – 1200/600 all flashing
Door Lock – rapid flashing]

Can anyone offer advice to what the fault may be either the error code that the lights are signifying or suggestions to what to check??

The likeliest cause is a faulty heating element.

The heater needs testing for continuity and resistance, with the mains plug removed of course. 😉

PS. Its best to give the flashing lights by number, either from top down or from left to right ignoring the rapid flashing mains/door light.

Thanks for replying – Is it a separate heating element for the wash cycle as the tumble dryer is still drying clothes?

To simplify the lighting arrangement it is as follows (sorry if I have caused confusion and thanks for the tip):

Top down right hand side bank of lights
1. Off
2. Flashing
3. Flashing
4. Flashing

Heater relay fault.

The water heater is situated low down at the back of the outer drum. The dryer heater is inside the dryer chamber located on the top of the drum.

Worth checking the heater first but that error code suggests a main PCB fault. 😥

If the wash heater is OK and you still intend to proceed with a repair yourself then EMW is your friend. 😉

I have taken out the bottom element and visually inspected – no signs of anything obvious. 🙁

I only have a continuity tester at present and found no continuity between the live and neutral terminal, earth and live terminals or neutral and earth terminals.

Do you think the element is dead from these results or should I borrow a multi-meter to carry out a resistance test?

There is no need whatsoever to take the element out ot check it.

The only real way to test it fully is by doing a resistance test, it should read about 31Ω.

I’ve carried out a resistance test and didn’t get a reading (it remained on 1), I assume this means the element is blown as its not reading a resistance?

What do you think? 😕

Bought a new heater element and carried out a resistance test to get a reading of 31.5Ω.

The washing machine has now completed a test cycle so fingers crossed we can say this one is resolved 🙂
