ParticipantHi I have a Hotpoint CTD80 and today halfway through the cycle it started making a whirring noise. When I opened the door their was quite a bit of steam came out of the drum. I emptied the drum and tried it again it made the noise as if it was going to start, but the front fan at the bottom wasn`t turning, the drum wasn`t turning, however the elements do heat up. I took the top and right hand side of the drier off and gave it a clean as their was alot of fluff and dust. I checked the belt which seems ok. I tried to start it again. And again the drum would not turn. but if I rotated the drum it would start to move, but maybe not at full speed. If I done the same with a load in it would turn for a bit then eventually stop. It seems like a lack of power to turn the drum. I`ve read it could be the capacitor. Could someone confirm this or give any other reason what is wrong.
Cheers

sound very likely but the only way you can be sure is swop it. if it works ok if it does not them its probably the motor

Went and got a new capacitor today. Fitted it and now the dryer is working again. 😀

When I thought it was working ok, went and put a load in and set the time . With about 10 mins remaining it pauses, their is a beep, F07 starts to flash on the LED and it carries on for the remaining 10 mins. Have checked on most websites as their isn`t supposed to be a fault code F07 for a Hotpoint. However some websites say that it may be a Lower Heater Element failure. When the trouble first stopped with the tumble dryer and the drum stopped moving, but the heat cycle was still carrying on, their was a lot of steam coming from inside the drum. Could this have effected the thermostat. I tried to reset the thermostat by putting a pin in the small hole in the thermostat. But I didn`t hear a click. Could it be that I have to replace the whole heating element?

F07 will only display on models with a certain type of firmware. It is supposed to be a lower element failure, if the stats were at fault you would get no heat at all, in fact the machine would be totally dead on later models if the safety stat had failed.
Heating element needs testing but TBH they are very delicate to say the least.
You shouldn’t really see a lot of steam even so, have you cleaned the condenser unit on a regular (every couple of weeks) basis?
There are four different heater assemblies used on this machine, the full serial number and commercial code is needed to identify correct part.

Not getting any steam now. I only got it when the first problem happened, the drum had stopped turning but the cycle was still heating. So the damp clothes were just lying in the drum being heated by the element. I`m just wondering if the steam has maybe caused some damaged.

Unlikely the steam would damage the element , still need to test that lower element.

Cheers Iadom. Sorry took so long to get back. Have had a look at the elements at the back. There is four elements. And had it on a high heat cycle and only the top two elements heat up. So could it be that I need to get a new heating element?

There are only two elements, if you look closely you will see that each of the two pairs are one single element. You cannot test an element by looking at it, you need to check it electrically.
NB. You should NOT run the dryer with the back off, you may only see one element glowing even though the other one is perfectly OK. Time for someone with a suitable multimeter or megger to have a look.

Have a multimeter in the cupboard which I`ve very rarely used. Is it the continuity of the lower element that just needs to be checked.

Continuity and resistance.

Done continuity and resistance tests.
Top Element:
Continuity – 047
Resistance – 47.3Lower Element:
Continuity – No Reading
Resistance – No ReadingSo I`m assuming that the whole heating element needs replaced. And like you said their is four elements for this type and had a look at the heating element and could find no part number on it. Know what it looks like. Will just have to go to nearest parts shop to try and get one.
