I have a Hotpoint TDC 00 condensing tumble dryer, which up until now has been a reliable, quiet dryer.

Recently it has started to squeak on every drum rotation. I thought the noise was coming from the front of the drum , but on closer inspection the noise is louder at the back. It is driving me mad!!

Maybe bearings or something, but there is not grinding just loud squeaking.

Is there any solution to this problem, perhaps a modification to help stop it happening after fixing?

    Many thanks in advance 😀

A good chance that the rear bearing and shaft has worn.

At the back of the machine there is a small cap located dead centre. If you remove this you will see a small brass strip. Under this is the end of the drum rear bearing and shaft. If the cap is full of black dust it is likely that the shaft is badly worn or indeed has snapped off.

There is a kit to replace all the parts including front and rear bearings, drum shaft and both seals. Not expensive but also not the easiest of DIY jobs.

It could also be a worn jockey pulley.

    Thankyou for your quick reply.

You were spot on! Lots of black dust in the cap at the rear!!!

So I’ll asume the kit is what I need.

Anything I should look out for when working out how to dis-assemble and refit? (other than disconnecting the mains…LOL)

    Thanks again 😀

Just noticed my model appears to be riveted shaft (2 rivets), not screwed…..

well, first off, its a CTD00

secondly, its screwed, your looking at the wrong thing

the shaft is on the back of the drum.. to clarify, open the door, and look to the rear, youl see 3 screws, dead centre, with tx screws… thats where the drum shaft screws to the drum

the drum needs to come out to replace it

top off, rh side panel off (lookin from front )

then the pin comes off the shaft, and the drum will come out when you release the bar across the top

not a nice job, just take your time and be methodical about it

contains all the parts you could possibly need, including all felt seals, front supports, rear bearing and a drum locking pin

    good luck

I’ve edited the thread title for you. 🙂

Just to add, watch the cabinet edges, they are very sharp.

Didn’t know whether to start a new thread on this subject so I thought I’d start here, incase anyone else get the same problem.

Okay, so all stripped down, seals/felt replaced, plastic ‘bearings’ (of which I only got 4 new, so used 1 old 1 as well).

Spindle fitted to back of drum, washer behind, then back panel on with square spindle bearing fitted, collar and locking pin.

    All done!!! …….but

Now after a couple of mins, after it gets hot, I get vibration, noisy vibration. Sometimes its gets louder then will ‘reverse cycle’ and quiet down a bit.

:rolls: Have I done something wrong?

There are only four bearing pads used, where did you stick the ‘old one’. 😕

It could be the drum binding on this pad, wherever it is. 😯

Re: Hotpoint CTD00 00 squeaks on every drum rotation!!

I had 5 bearing pads on mine, I used one of the old ‘white’ ones for bottom and 2 new ones to the left and right..

so so i have pads at 4,5,6,7aand 8 o’clock (best way i could decribe it)

btw, new pads were black, old ones white. Dont think this is relevant.

    Thanks again

I don’t doubt what you say but I have never seen one with five pads. 😕 ❓

The black pads should be fitted at 4,5,7, & 8 o’clock.

    Hey Jim,

my model is ctd 00 p, don’t know if it was an earlier one but yes it has 5 pads.

it seems to be as it gets hotter that vibration occurs.

I think I was pretty thorough with the removal of old seals and cleaning but possiblysome damp fluff got between the felt? I have it on now and seems a bit quieter than an hour ago(only very slight vibration on door now) so fingers crossed.

Thanks again Jim for all your advice and help.

    Shaun 🙂

Re: Hotpoint CTD00 00 squeaks on every drum rotation!!

spoke too soon!!! LOL…..getting noisy again.

seems to be on one direction more than the other.

maybe I will try removing the ‘old’ bearing guide, (6 o’clock). Leaving the 4 that came in the kit (4,5,7 and 8 o’clock).

just remembered….I was left with 1 piece from the kit……my machine didn’t seem to have a place for this object. My best decription of it is : Brass, teardrop with centre hole and hole at top of teardrop. I think this was an alternative rear bearing to my ‘square’ type.

Re: Hotpoint CTD00 00 squeaks on every drum rotation!!

The teardrop bearing is the later one, supposed to stop the shaft wearing through but it still wears away almost as quickly as the square one. It won’t fit your machine.

I’m intrigued by your ‘extra’ bearing pad. The early versions of this machine had two wheels or pulleys to support the drum at the front instead of bearings. They caused an awful noise and were superceded by the four bearing pads.

These pads have been used without any problem on the Creda dryer on which this machine is very loosely based for over 25 years without major problems.

I have seen hundreds of Creda, Hotpoint, Indesit dryers, never seen one with five pads though.

The fans on these often cause noise, particularly the large one hidden inside the front of the dryer.

Your description does sound like a binding drum though.

    Jim.
