ParticipantHi, I have a Hotpoint CTD00 tumble drier and the motor does not spin.
When you close the door and start it up, you can hear the pump start and also the heating elements heat up, but the motor does not start.I regularly check the tumble drier over and perform routine maintenance such as cleaning the fluff filter, condenser, water pump and tank, remove the bearing on the drum and clean and lubricate it. I also use a hoover to get rid of all the dust and fluff that builds up everywhere.
After doing all of this and checking that the drum and motor rotates freely (which it does), I also checked the electrical connections on the capacitor and the ones on the back of the timer unit. I unplugged them all and then plugged them back in. The tumble drier now works as it should. Have I just got lucky with a dirty / bad connection or is it likely that something is on its way out?
Nick.

It might be a good idea to replace the motor’s capacitor. Cheap as chips so well worth doing otherwise if the motor burns out it is a scrap heap job!

I’ve done a bit of research and you have confirmed what I suspected, so thank you 🙂
We have since done a few loads of washing and it still works perfectly, but I have ordered a new capacitor anyway, as like you said it’s only a couple of quid.
I will fit it and then monitor the performance for a while, and then report back. Hopefully all will be ok,as I don’t really fancy forking out for a new tumble dryer right before Christmas!Sent from my GT-I8190N using Tapatalk

Well, the new capacitor has been in for a few weeks now, and the tumble dryer hasn’t missed a beat, so job done me thinks 🙂
This was a five minute job which anyone could do – however, if you are going to attempt it, be aware that capacitors are dangerous and need to be handled correctly to avoid the possibility of an electric shock.
First of all unplug the appliance before carrying out any kind of maintenance. Then remove the top and side panel to reveal the capacitor. Do not touch the capacitor yet as it may still hold a charge. Using insulated long nose pliers, remove the electrical connectors from the capacitor. Then using an insulated screwdriver place the metal end across both terminals on the capacitor. This will discharge the capacitor and make it safe to touch. The retaining screw can then be removed and the capacitor unscrewed by hand.
Then simply fit the new one – easy!I hope this brief explanation helps anyone considering doing this job.
