ParticipantHi guys,
We’ve got a Hotpoint CTD40 which has developed the infamous flashing lights syndrome as follows:
On/Off light flashing slowly, plus the following flashing at around double the speed:-
Time Delay; Pre Creasecare; High Heat; and Alarm. The following are not flashing:
Post Creasecare; Empty Water; 3hr; drying/6 hr; Cool Tumble/9 hr; Post Care/12 Hr.Running from left to right the lights that are flashing are:
1, 2, 3, 4 and 11.I’ve had a very good search and can’t find anything comparable.
Also, the filter and condenser are cleaned out after every use so that’s not the problem.
It seems to be overheating and not cooling or turning itself off with the sensor. Is it a simple thermostat sensor job which I an do myself or do I need to get somebody in?
Thanks for your help.

The top four vertical lights on the left of the console next to the option buttons, together with the top,far right POST CARE light and the flashing ON/OFF light are used for error codes.
That is to say that the only one of the horizontal lights apart from the ON/OFF light that is used for error codes is the POST CARE light.
You could try unplugging the machine for a few minutes , but it does sound as though you have more than a simple stat failure, the electronics used on these machines are prone to falling over if the wind changes direction. 😥
Jim.
PS, If you mean that all of the four vertical lights next to the option buttons plus the ON/OFF are flashing then you do indeed have a PCB failure, the heater relay contacts have welded closed.

Thanks for the reply.
Damn, that’s not good.
Having had a quick look, it’s probably cheaper to get Hotpoint to repair it rather than try and get a PCB and do it myself as it’s only a couple of years old and I’ll just have their call-out charge – anybody any idea how much they want for that?

Give them a ring, module is £70 + vat, their labour is just under £90.00 so if anything else is required you are quids in (just :rolls: )
They may try their current ‘ploy’ ( almost typed scam there) of offering to do the job plus giving you parts & labour cover for 12 months for £149.00, I know what I would tell them to do with that. 😉
Your parts are still covered and they are asking you to pay £60.00 to cover 12 months labour. :rolls:

ParticipantYou’re spot on Jim – they tried their ‘ploy’ to get the 12 month warranty for £140 including the £90 for the repair. I’ve been really unimpressed by this dryer. Had all the bells and whistles we’re after (delay start, sensor dry) but it had 2 repairs under the 12 month warranty and now this at 2 years old. I’m looking to just stick it on Ebay as a faulty machine and hope for £20 and just buy a replacement.
Having read through the forums, a vented dryer is the way forward, and sesnor dry is a must. We’re swaying towards AEG/Electrolix/Zanussi from your advice, but what about Hoover? Are they part of a group and would they realistically last? My wife’s seen one she likes. We are a family of 6 and our dryer is on about 10 times a week, so whatever we get will get a battering. I will not spend more than £250, so please don’t try and tempt me with AEG, Meile, ISE please! Also, no need for a condenser this time, we needed it in our last house, but I guess I can core a hole through the utility room wall to ensure lower energy bills and better reliability.
Thanks again for your help on this.

Lux group ( AEG/Zanussi/Electrolux etc) dryers are better than Candy ( Hoover) by some margin.
PS. Ever heard the phrase, cake & eat it, 😉 😆

ParticipantThanks Jim, do I get some cake with the Zanussi/AEG?Elecrolux models too?? That’s clinched the deal, I’ll get one of those then!

Of course you get cake, it will just be inedible. 😉 TBH ten loads a week is not over excessive, with a family of six you may well find that you do far more than that, there are only two of us at home now but the dryer ( a 10 year old Hotpoint ) will do four to six loads a week. It is a basic, non sensing, reversing, vented dryer based on the original Creda design, good for another ten years yet.
Jim.
