    Hi all, first post.
Had ctd80 dryer for a few years now, insured until recently when the cost of the policy out weighed the value of the machine. Then Sods law struck. Started scraping and whining and sometimes not rotating.
I remember when it happened before, an engineer changed the back bearing and the plastic pads at the front.
Bought a kit, and spent today stripping and replacing the said parts. I did notice that 2 of the bearing pads had totally disintegrated and the drum had been running on the area where the pads should be, causing it to become worn and thin. I replaced all the parts best I could, rebuilt using the old belt as I couldnt see how to remove it from the motor assy.
The drum rotates with no load but as soon as the slightest weight is in the drum its a no go.
Thought the belt was over stretched but it appears the plastic jockey is either well worn or there is a bush missing as the hole is approx 10 mm and the shaft is approx 6mm.
Question is, would the worn jockey cause these symptoms?
Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.
    Michael.

Thanks, will get one asap. Dryer very busy in our house.
Btw, how do you remove the belt from around the motor shaft?

You don’t , there is no need,. Read the thread below yours in this forum re Hotpoint TCL 770, tells you all you need to know.

    Re: Hotpoint CTD80 belt tensioner

Hi, the question about the belt is for future reference as when I had the drum out today I noticed a few cracks in the rubber.
Yeah I removed the jockey wheel with aid of a ratchet spanner, never needed to move much to get it. Probably be a bit more difficult to get back on that way though.
    Thanks for the reply.

    Re: Hotpoint CTD80 belt tensioner

That’s why I saidyou don’t remove the belt. you wait until it snaps then replace it, the access to do this is by following the instructions in that other thread for changing the pulley. 😉

Fitted the new jockey today, drum still wont turn under full load.
Have now ordered a new belt, which means another stripdown, (from the front this time?)
Getting slightly peed off as the dryer was actually working before I started, although it was making a grinding noise.
Fingers crossed the belt solves all.

    Re: Hotpoint CTD80 belt tensioner

Was the belt hard to get over the pulley, can you hear a buzzing noise?

Unheard of for these belts to become too slack, they have always snapped long before then.

If you do get a buzzing noise then it could be the motor capacitor, a very common fault………………..or you may have refitted the belt incorrectly to the pulley. 😉

    Re: Hotpoint CTD80 belt tensioner

The way I fitted the belt over the new pulley was to put the back bolt in first then force the pulley down until the metal clip slotted into the hole in the motor. Didnt really take much effort but I do think its the right way.. when the dryer is switched on empty it spins no problem but with a load in the belt just slips round the drum. The dryer is around 7 years old and is on most days 2 or 3 times.
    Thanks again.

    Re: Hotpoint CTD80 belt tensioner

My guess is that you have the belt routed the wrong way, can you post a picture?

I have never, ever changed a belt on one of these because it was slipping or had become slack.

It won’t do any harm to change the belt but it is a rather difficult job to do TBH.

Have a look at the picture numbered 9 in THIS thread, that is the correct way the belt should be fitted.

    Re: Hotpoint CTD80 belt tensioner

The fact it didn’t take much effort says to me you may have put it back wrong. The belt should be really tight. As said above post a pic so we can tell

    Re: Hotpoint CTD80 belt tensioner

Here a pic of the belt. Ive done one load, split into 3 and now I have a little more stuff in and its turning just now.
When I had it open to take the picture I switched it on and basically the weight of my hand on the drum was enough to make the belt slip.
could it be binding on the new wear pads I fitted at the front of the machine?

    Re: Hotpoint CTD80 belt tensioner

Are you sure the belt was actually slipping or would the drum just not turn under load? That belt looks to have sufficient tension.

The drum should turn by hand from inside the drum without to much effort, if it is tight then the belt will burn through in no time.

If the drum is free to turn then I would suggest you order and fit a new capacitor which will be a quick couple of minutes to change, you would not enjoy trying to change the belt.

    Capacitor

    Re: Hotpoint CTD80 belt tensioner

Hi, the belt was def slipping on the drum. Its on just now with half a load.
will see how it goes and maybe up the weight on the next load. If the capacitor was needing replaced wouldnt the motor just whine and not turn as the load would be too much for it.
