The motor can run with little or no load with a faulty capacitor, putting your hand on the drum is enough to stop it if the cap is faulty though.
Is the drum free to turn by hand?

Just put a load inand was slipping right away, I can turn the drum by hand from inside quite easily, not like a washing machine but not too difficult.
Got a belt coming, may be the next step.February 11, 2014 at 7:28 pm #409254iadom

The motor doesnt stop when I put my hand on the drum. The drum stopped and the belt kept going.

Very strange, but there is always a first time for everything and if as you say the belt is a bit cracked then probably best to do it now rather than let it fail .

Goin to end up throwing it out the window.
Had it on just now and now its started with the metal on metal rubbing noise again.
when I had it in bits I did notice the were markings on the inside of the back panel that may have been cased by the drum rubbing. But I thought this was caused by the drum dropping due to bearing failure.
Is there any reason why the drum would come into contact with the casing.
Looking from the top down you can see quite a bit of the front felt seal as if it may not be located properly.
I will take a pic when my phone charges up.
Thanks, michael.February 11, 2014 at 8:54 pm #409258thegooddr

Here are 2 photos of the drum position. Any ideas as to why it is rubbing at the back?

Because the rear bearing has failed, that is the reason the belt is slack. You need a new rear shaft and bearing kit, not a belt.
Take off the small cap covering the rear bearing at the back and I’ll bet a lot of black dust and possibly even the remnants of the drum shaft will fall out.
The kit to repair even includes a new belt. bearing kit

Hi, that was the first thing I replaced, rear bearing andfront wear pads. The only thing I never done was the felt seals.
the drum itself is much sturdier than before they were done as in no lift but there seems to be a lot of front to back play.February 11, 2014 at 10:31 pm #409261iadom

Ah, you should have changed the rear seal, and fitted the extra spacer washer.

Been reading an old post regarding hotpoint dryers and scraping noises, it appears dryers of this sort of age were notorious for this fault, and after a few failed mods hotpoint eventually changed the design of the drum.
Over the years of it being insured and even having an engineer out for the scraping noise on a previous occasion we were never informed of any mods or recalls.
I think a new drum is out of the question for my dryer due to its age and probably other things going wrong with it in future. But I may try the washers on the inside of the rear shaft. I fitted the one that came with the kit but I will maybe stick another one or two in.February 12, 2014 at 9:00 am #409263iadom

You really must change the seal as well. 😉

Just an update, stuck another washer on the shaft to move the drum away from the back panel, now working, no scraping and can take a full load.
strange but true.
I now have a spare belt, probably the next repair..
Hopefully get another few months or years out it yet….
