I wonder if any one can help me.

I have a hotpoint /Bosch dishwasher which has what seems to be a common problem, it does not empty correctly.

I have done all the basic inspections suggested on this forum (removed plastic cap, cut finger quite effectively on broken glass, checked rotation of impeller, removed and replaced non-return valve, checked that clear plastic pipe bottom left wasn’t blocked etc.)

Ran the machine again and now not emptying at all. Pump seems to vibrate rather than rotating. OK pump is faulty. Dismantle machine (tricky little row of asterixs isn’t it) and remove pump.

Problem is that removed pump seems to work fine when when connected directly to a power feed. Now I do not want to replace a perfectly good pump but on the other hand I don’t want to spend time reassembling the machine to find that it is the pump that is at fault. I have been around long enough to know that a simple test like this can give a false impression.

Can anybody help me please. I think I need to hear the voice of experience on this

Check again that there isn’t another piece of glass somewhere in the sump/pump housing/drain line….clear glass is virtually invisible in water as you unfortunately found out! Bear in mind that the pump will make strange noises and not rotate correctly until it has some water to push against.
Lastly check that the filter is undamaged and fully secured in the base when you run the machine…it’s there to stop things like glass/crockery chips as well as food residues.

Thanks Clive for your quick response.

I have checked and rechecked for any blockages and everything is completely clear. The thing is in pieces on my conservatory floor so I can get a Good Look Inside.

As I say the removed pump runs fast and powerfully but I wonder if this actually means anything

I have been here before with dishwshers making assumptions about a fault and replacing a part only to find that it something entirely different.

Is there anything else I should check?

So having assertained the pump works OK and the drain system is clear. Having reassembled your machine back to how it was, may I ask what exactly are the symptoms?

On your opening statement you said, “it does not empty correctly”. What do you mean by that? Because if the pump works and the drain system is clear of blockages and obstructions, then it should work?

At the start of each and every programme selection the first thing the machine does is the drain for 30 – 60 seconds. Is that what happens with your machine I wonder, or does something else happen?

    Martin Thanks for your response.

My problem is this. Is it possible that a pump that seems to work OK when removed and bench tested is in fact faulty?

I was hoping someone with experience of these machines would say that they are pesky little critturs and do that just to confuse amateurs. Change the pump.

It seemed to me that the pump was pretty weak.

Once the pump is running only a solid object placed in the impellor as it rotates should stop it. Similarly in a ‘bench testing situation’ trying to stop the impellor by hand is not too difficult but can be a painful test nevertheless. Like all mechanical devices, these pump are subjected to a fair bit of wear and tear in their lifetime and will need replacing at some stage? I would venture to suggest the only true test would be to purchase a new pump and be done. 😉

For your convenience here is what you need. 🙂

Ran the machine again and now not emptying at all. Pump seems to vibrate rather than rotating.

May sound stupid, but you did refit the plastic cover over the impellor didn’t you ❓ . Without that in place the pump will run forever, but never shift a drop.

I personally have have made this mistake before 😳

    Just a thought.

Thanks. New pump sorted the problem. My guess is that they contain a permanent magnet which loses its strength over time. Dont suppose there is any way of testing this though.
