ParticipantHello there. I have a Hotpoint DF62 dishwasher that has been working well for 15 years. However, this weekend it has decided to stop washing the dishes on the top tray very well at all.
The spray arm under the top tray rotates very slowly in comparison to the bottom one. I have taken the spray arm and the rest of the fitting apart and cleaned all if it out but this hasn’t solved the problem. The holes in the arm itself are all clear.
As I say the bottom arm spins and cleans well.
Does anyone know if this is likely to be a pump issue (i.e. not giving enough water pressure to the top arm) or something else? Any help gratefully received, thanks

This is a Bosch based machine, problem could be very expensive and technically difficult to fix.
Fault could be failing main motor or a problem inside the heater box.
Unless the small rubber seal at the back behind the upper basket hasn’t come adrift and blocked the upper nozzle, what happens if you run it without the top basket in place and open the door quickly when it is washing, you should get a jet of water shooting out at you.

It could simply be lack of sufficient water intake. Whilst the machine is operating (say about 5 mins into the programme) switch it off and check the water level. Does it lap the salt container cap?

Thanks for the two replies.
I opened the door without the basket and there is only a small jet (about 2 inches) coming from the nozzle. I can’t see anything blocking it though.
After about 5 mins the water is up to the salt cap………
The bottom arm spins really well and the water gets piping hot as normal.
thanks for your help so far

From what you have told us then the problem is the main circulating pump Impellor. It is either blocked with debris or has split. It can be inspected for debris by using a dentist type mirror to look at the pump inlet. If the Impellor has split in two only dismantling will reveal. 🙁

thanks again Martin – whats the easiest way to get access to the impeller – is it via a side panel? If so do you know how to remove the side panel?

Remove the top panel first (plastic latches at the back) then remove the two front screws holding the side panel on. You will then have full access to the main circulating pump.
Please do not ask for step by step instructions as to how to remove the circulating pump. A little applied electro-mechanical experience is sufficient to proceed you will find. 😉

All sorted. Thanks for your help and suggestions Martin with this. For reference I removed the side panel which exposed a large plastic piping system which is connected to the cold inlet and outlet pipes. This has become quite clogged with silt etc so I took it out and thoroughly cleaned it all. Once i’d reassembled it all, it worked perfectly and all my dishes are being cleaned as good as new. Saved me a considerable call out charge or replacement. Thanks again,
