I completely agree with you Mike, in fact my ‘acid test’ on all things bearings related is that if the drum has any appreciable lateral movement then it surely has a collapsed front bearing/shaft damage issue. In the case of those spiders and those darn torx bolts “it’s a no from me!”
As to your Phidom related question, I haven’t the foggiest, so, pass! 🙁

I always take a set of bearings, drum rear and spider on these jobs.
The customer will have been made aware of the various price options beforehand.
I find that changing the spider takes no more than ten minutes longer. Drill the bolts out with a titanium drill, lever it out carefully and refit with new bolts, a doddle.
All done on the premises, outside weather permitting. 8)

Ah yes but Mike’s problem is more of logistics you must realise. He got over shifting machines years ago by converting his bike thus: –

But gave up the idea of adding a trailer due to downtown parking problems : –

Hence why Mike has to rationalise every job before hitting the road. 😀

Yes Martin, that is indeed the major factor for me but I haven’t bothered to make any outlandish mods to any of my bikes. Two office type panniers on the back and what won’t fit in gets bungee’d on top.
Jim, I don’t doubt you can do the whole job in 45 minutes. Me, I’m quite happy with the slow and deliberate pace of life down here.Still no answer to my original question. Will probably pm Phidom about it later. Be nice to talk to somebody with in-depth knowledge. 😛

Just checked on my stock and that is what the latest, genuine spiders look like, hadn’t noticed they had changed. 😳

45 minutes would be a rushed and potentially botched job. Quality over speed every time is my motto. 8) I always allow 90 minutes, sometimes takes less, sometimes more.
