ParticipantDoing the above job with the large diameter drum shaft. I noticed the old shaft has a counter seal at the base

and the new one doesnt

Is this correct or should there be a seal there please ??Thank you.

The old one probably has a bit that has come away from the old seal and stuck to the shaft.
New one looks fine, the seal is made against the shaft, not the flat of the alloy casting.

That`s part of the old seal . Remove by easing off with a large flat-bladed screwdriver and clean up the shaft ….

Ah yes LUFC……whatever happened to them?
Even more off topic this next bit (sorry ) but that reminds me….You’ll be splicing the mainbrace again very soon Cap’n Jim so may I wish you god speed in search of the northwest passage this time. Be warned though that should you spot a penguin from that lofty perch atop you may just need to take another bearing with that rusty sextant of yours?:martin:

I was under the impression from reading in this very forum that the state of the shaft is not critical because the inner part of the seal moves relative to the outer part of the seal. That is to say that the inner part of the seal with its ridges can be debor’d to the worn shaft and no H2O shall there pass through. Can someone confirm or deny this as it would be handy to know for next time.

Well with the drum spider at £13.13 ex vat from Masterpart why would you risk it. 😉

Plus with the state of that shaft I doubt the bearings would sit very well on it.

Having a 2nd look at DDDave’s photo’s I don’t recognise his new drum spider as being Hotpoint anyway, not a WM or WMA that I’ve seen before? 😕

Hmm, you are correct Martin, the old one is definitely a WMA35 spider.
The casting on the new one looks totally different, a pattern spare perhaps?

I probably wouldn’t risk it with one like that in the photo but with one that was less damaged, yes I would. Especially as it would do away with the need to undo those torx bolts and risk damage to the drum with all the wrenching and messing around. Plus hassle/expense of obtaining new bolts.
As no-one has directly answered my question I will have to assume that none of you knows for sure. I seem to remember it was Phidom who originally brought this to my attention. Not having to change the spider is a big plus for me. I don’t have a workshop where I can just bring back complete drums for re-conditioning. I do all such jobs on site.
