    Hiya,

We moved into our new house inheriting a hotpoint DWM55. It’s been dandy for ages, but recently hasn’t been cleaning as well. I put it on this morning with some dishwasher cleaner in, and it’s come up with two flashing fault lights – 45 & 40 – and it isn’t draining. I’ve rung hotpoint and they suggested it was likely to be a kink or block in the outlet pipe – I’ve checked this, and there doesn’t seem to be any obvious problem. Is there anything else I can check before getting an engineer out and having to pay £90?

If you give us the flashing neons by number from left it would help. No drain should be neons 1+2.

Sadly this is actually a 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} Indesit machine 😥 . Pump blockages are quite common but easily cleared. Plug out, tilt onto left side, base off, towels at the ready, drain pump is at the end of the grey plastic inlet hose.

Okay, from the left it goes Rinse Aid, 65oC, 55oC, and then 45oc and 40oc, which are the two that were flashing (followed by Prewash & 50oC). So that’s lights 4 and 5, if you’re counting from the left (and including Rinse Aid).

    Thanks for your help.

Neons 4+5 are a drain time out, As your machine has 7 neons the last four are used for error codes, so 4+5 = 1+2 on a four neon machine.

Blocked pump still most likely suspect.

    Howdy,

Well, with screwdriver, pliers, towels and your helpful info I’ve been inside the thing, unconnected what I assume is the pump, given it a clean, and the washer is at least doing something now. Not sure it’s operating as was – the lights don’t seem to be doing anything I recognize for a start – but we seem to have something towards a functioning dishwasher. Thank-you for all your help!

It only takes the smallest particle of glass, bone, chipped china, plastic, piece of sweetcorn etc to jam the pump.

Always a good idea to rinse the dishes well before loading them into the machine.

A-ha… may have spoken to soon. The dishwasher is certainly making noises towards being fixed, but one of the lights that was flashing before (the 45oC one) is now constantly flashing, and no more progress than that! Any ideas?

Edit – By the way, and this has no bearing on whether you can help me any further, but i have to say that this website is fantastic, and has already saved me loads of money, simply by having someone explain things in a way that’s easy to understand. If I have to go out and get a mechanic at least I’ll know I’ll have tried, and that wouldn’t happen without this website. Ta!

This may be self inflicted. It is easy to refit the pump without properly securing the three locking lugs, this will cause a leak into the base, this water will lift the float switch and give the error code you now have. You need to go back inside and make sure you have refitted the pump and small rubber seal correctly.

You will get water running out as soon as you tilt the machine.
