ParticipantI have a Hotpoint EW74, basically the main oven light comes on, the fan does not rotate or any heat. I have used a multimeter to test the main oven element and the motor and they are NOT open circuit, the top oven element works fine. Any ideas?

Oven switch, safety stat? They’d be the first things to look toward.

Hi Thank you for the reply,
When you say oven switch do you mean the dial to change oven temperature? if so when you turn it the red light does come on. So not sure if that means anything.
Safety stat, is that on the rear of the main oven and the top of the top oven? a flat device with two terminals coming out of it? if so they are both O/C.
Sorry for the questions.

I think on that model there is an oven selector switch, that selects the function of the oven.
It also looks as if there is a cooling fan control or monitor thermostat and a thermal limiter or overheat thermostat fitted.
Any of the above could cause your problem although the monitor thermostat states that it cuts in and 65?C so that may well start OC.
Hotpoint (Indesit) aren’t exactly open with the technical info at all so it’s as much as I can glean from what little there is. We have to work it out as well.

Hi, This oven does not have a selector swtich to choose the different ovens, just a temperature adjuster with a red light next to it.
People say about “auto” causing an issue, but am I right in saying I wouldnt get the oven light on either if it was in “auto” mode?
Do you know where I can locate this items you mention and test them? I am competent at dismantling electrical items and also using a digital multimeter.

No idea but the parts listing shows a selector switch.
Yes auto can but not if the oven light comes on.
Thermostats will be on the top of the oven cavity most likely.

As a rule the safety stat on the top should be O/C and go C/C in order to switch the cooling fan on and off. That is regarded as a ‘cycling stat’ whereas the safety stat on the back of the oven cavity is normally C/C and would only go O/C if an overheat (e g over stat failure) situation occurs. That safety stat is classed as a one shot fuse (once triggered it no longer resets and needs replacing once the fault has been rectified).
But I have no clue about the specifics of this particular make and model, so make of it what you will?
