Hotpoint EXFM 171G not working

I bought a Hotpoint EXFM 171G fridge/freezer online in August 2013. A few weeks ago I started to get the sound of, apparently, a pump starting up after closing the door. This has now stopped but the fridge is no longer working. The freezer part appears to be ok. The compressor is warm and there is a little puttering sound coming from it or maybe it’s a fan. Nothing else obvious round the back. No frost and no water showing. I’m afraid Hotpoint are not being helpful so I’m hoping I might gain a bit of knowledge before I make a fuss.

as with all frost free fridge freezers “there not” and require defrosting occasionally

switch off open doors and leave for about 2 days. if there is hidden ice round the back it will stop fans and block the ducts that allow the cold air to get to the fridge
