Hotpoint FFS70S – Blocked fridge drain hole

Hi,
The drain hole at the back of my fridge freezer is holding water (fridge part) . Ive tried cleaning the hole by sticking in a straw to clear any blockages but this does nothing, any ideas what the problem is? shall i try and syphon out the water 🙂 or is the temperature of the fridge too hot or too cold??? please help thanks Gavin

ggrr.. how old is it?

some of them had the drain pipe foamed in too close to the evaporator, and water froze in the pipe

does it feel hard?

i normally take the pipe off the rear of the machine and blow up it

only way if it aint iced up

Nearly 4 years old, the straw goes all the way in when i try to clean it, so not frozen at the top end, ill check at the back and check if the pipe is frozen lower down, if it is can it be fixed or not? could i perhaps insulate the pipe so it dosent freeze again? out of interest where does the water go then when it enters the pipe?

The water drips into a tray on top of the compressor, where the heat evaporates it away.

I always get a wire coat hangar.Cut it and bend it out.It will go all the way to the bottom so clearing any debris and you will know if it hits ice.

ok thanks for all of your help.

had a look at the back of the fridge freezer last night but no sign of a pipe connected at the back for the drip tray. back seems all consealed until you get down to the bottom.

ill try it with a wire coat hanger, if I hit ice am i in trouble? or what should I do?

Yes the gutter pipe is foamed in on these models.
Hopefully when you push the wire all the way down you should see it appear at the bottom from the pipe above plastic evaporator dish on top of the compressor.
You say its over 4 years old,if you do hit ice the only thing you can do is to turn appliance off take all food and drawers out leaving the doors open.
Leave it for 24 hours if you can it will make sure any ice has gone.Try again with the wire and you should be able to push it all the way down.

Hotpoint FFS70S – Blocked fridge drain hole – SOLUTION?

A year on and I’m stiil getting the same problem.

Drainage hole at the back keeps freezing up no matter how many times i unfreeze it.

I did call out Hotpoint Engineer his verdict after 2mins was that he could do nothing about it, he seemed to think that it may have been damaged when moved (as we recently moved house) and that there was a crack in the moulded drainage pipe and no way to repair it, the crack must be close to the part that cools or freezes the fridge and is causing the water to freeze in the pipe (thankfully he didnt charge me for his visit all of 5mins) he siad about that there was an option that Hotpoint could party pay towards another fridge or discount from one of thier suppliers, if I wasnt able to live with the fault.

So regulary have to mop up water from bottom of fridge compartment that has nowhere to go as its hard work to keep breaking up the ice with hot water and a piece of metal wire.

I may try the following just wondering if anybody has tried these or could suggest anything else that might work.

1. One suggestion was to defrost pipe and put a piece of copper wire down the pipe and wrap the other end around the hot pipes at the bottom of the fridge so that the heat would be conducted up the wire and prevent freezing – would this work or has anybody tried this.

2. The other thing I was thinking was to try and line the existing pipe with something or even try and put another pipe down into it to stop it freezing.

Hi, 1st suggestion, the copper wire idea, there is no way you would get any heat to travel all the way up the wire to keep the ice at bay, 2nd idea was answered in your origional post, the pipe is foamed in & is prob too close to the freezer and therefore keeps freezing & blocking, so lining it will serve no purpose either, unfortunatly its a case of live with it or replace it, sorry
