    Hi,

Just bought a second hand Hotpoint “First Edition” Fridge Freezer.

I transported it in an estate car on it’s side. Is this fatal ? I now understand it is a bad thing to do. The ride was short and smooth with no banging and bouncing.

I left it standing for 24 hours and powered on.
Fridge appears OK, will go down to 4 degrees on max setting.

Freezer does not want to go below -13

Does the freezer have a thermostat ? I cannot see one.

Is there a coolant diversion control somewhere ?

The fridge thermostat has 5 or 6 wires connected, all of which do not go to the connection block on the compressor. This infers there is ‘something else’ buried in the casing.

Do I need a mass of food in the freezer ?

Can I get info on the connections to the stat in the fridge ? I am wondering if this has been swapped or someone has been in there, as the small plug that covers the screw to remove the plastic stat housing is marked where it has been popped out to gain access to the screw.

    Any other suggestions ?

My guess is you’ve been sold a faulty unit I’m afraid.

1st thing to check, is the motor (compressor) running constantly as this would indicate a system failure ?

No it doesn’t run continuously. In fact it stays off for quite some time. I think that it is following the fridge stat.
i.e. fridge down to temperature compressor stops

In that case you should be OK 😀

The only temperature control is the fridge thermostat, unless it’s staying off for too long.

How reliable is the thermometer you are using ? 😉

I just noticed your user name, please ignore the email I sent as you obviously don’t have the log in poroblem any longer

Re: Hotpoint “First Edition” Fridge Freezer Proble

So the fridge stat regulates the fridge temperature and the freezer is assumed to be correct by the amount of coolant that goes it’s way ?
    Is that correct ?

The freezer cooling surfaces are across the top, below the top compartment, down the back and across the bottom, but it really is only the top surface that gets very cold. It is quite quick to develop some frost on it but the other surfaces don’t appear to. Would it be possible to get a trap or lock in there ?

The fridge does seem to stay off for quite long periods.

Ref the login, yes fine thanks. I hadn’t done the email response.

The thermometer is a Maplin’s one with probe on the end of a cable.
I tried it in another freezer and it is -19 to -20 so thermometer looks good.

    Basically yes.

I guess you could try changing the fridge thermostat and see if it improves, if not then there is either nothing wrong or there is a system problem (weak compressor, system blockage or coolant shortage).

One thing I didn’t ask, how long has it been running for as it may well not have stabilised which won’t be helped by constantly opening the door to check ?

Re: Hotpoint “First Edition” Fridge Freezer Proble

Have left it running for 3 days with food in the freezer and stat set to max.
Fridge goes to +3, freezer hangs around -10. Food was transferred from another freezer and after 3 days was no longer rock solid.

Is there anywhere I can get access to the wiring for the stat. I am still suspicious of this, please see previous post. Stat has more wires than appear at the compressor junction block which I find strange.

No wiring diagram will be avaiable I’m afraid.

Engineer time I think to be honest for a correct diagnosis 😉

Re: Hotpoint “First Edition” Fridge Freezer Proble

I will run with a stat for now. I have removed it.
I am presuming it is 6 to 4 when warm to power compressor, and then 6 to 3 when cold to power fridge heater.
I am seeing some ohms across the contacts which vary when the stat is tapped so it doesn’t look too special.

Is there a stat in your shop ?

I think the Hotpoint part number is HPT2600413

The stat I have removed is Ranco K59-P3126

Would Ranco ever have been original fit ? Does this imply it has been swapped previously.

(Fridge heater measures 10k which would generate around 5 watts. I guess this sounds about right.)

2600413 is correct for this model but it’s £30.85 ex VAT and carriage from Hotpoint 😯

Ranco would be the original yes, you can get a “universal” K59 HERE in our shop 😀

Your terminal connections are also correct.

    Dave.
