    Hi,

    The compressor on my Hotpoint Future RF187B fridge / freezer has started running continually.

    The unit is 3 years old.

    The temps in the fridge and freezer seem fine, and the unit is running on setting 2/5.

    the area in between the freezer and fridge sections becomes hot, as does the compressor.

    If I lower the setting to 1.8 the compressor then stops. The unit is silent for a while, then the compressor starts again, and again will not stop. If I raise the setting again to 2, then wait, then reduce the setting again the compressor will stop.

    (the lights in the fridge section do go out when the door is shut)

    I’ve tried:

    * defrosting the freezer (but only for a few hours, some frost remains)
    * cleaning the coils
    * hovering under the unit itself

    To me it sounds like either:

    * the motherboard has died
    * the seals on the door have lost their effectiveness – they don’t seem to pass the dollar bill test

    So my question is given the symptoms, is it

    a) worth trying to repair it myself,
    b) having the unit repaired by indesit £160 + 12 months additional warranty,
    c) having the unit repaired by someone else, or
    d) should I freecycle it for parts and buy a new, better unit?

    All help welcome.

    Howard

    Sounds like you may have a refrigerant loss or slightly under performing compressor.
    Would neeed an engineer for either fault.
