ParticipantI had a call the the above machine for an estate agent, fault, stains on clothes.
I assumed this would be bearing s and expected the machine to be noisy or have some indication of oil on the rear of the drum or inside rear of the cabinet. Unfortunately there’s no other sign of a bearing problem other than the small grey dots that match the holes in the drum indicative of bearings failing.
I am still of the opinion it’s the bearing but thought I would check here if there’s anything else that could cause the same type of marks on the washing before submitting an estimate.

Fractured or corroded alloy drum support can leave marks like that.
If there is no sign of any major build up of gunge inside the pump filter housing or inside the door seal then as the machine has a sealed drum it looks like a drum change is on the cards.March 14, 2017 at 9:19 pm #446060HotDog

phone the water board up and get them to flush the mains through there will be a build up of sediment in the mains its getting filtered through the clothes and it will match the holes in the drum

Thanks, I’ll get the agent to contact the water authority.

We’ve got this section, been there for a few years or so…
http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/help/stai … ine-stains
Almost every single staining fault known to mankind is there. Every possible cause.
All you need to do is… well, use it. 😉
And, I’d bet dollars to donuts you’ll find out what it is and, it probably won’t be bog all to do with the water supply.

Thanks Ken,I’m tempted to take you up on a bet.
I know this section of the site well. I refer customers to it regularly because as I’m sure as you have also found, they don’t always believe you when you tell them it’s not the machine causing the stains.
I wasn’t aware of anything in this section that relates to the dots refered to but on your advise have been through it a couple of times and still can’t find anything that helps.
Which of the listed causes would you say this could be?

Probably, something on the laundry before it even goes in the wash, grease or something like that would be a good bet and that may not be visible before washed or the like of deodorant etc that’s attracting the dirt in spots. Couple that with the wrong wash cycle or incorrect detergent use and you’d get exactly what you describe.

Thanks Ken,
Attracting the dirt spots? is that dirt brought in with the water? It either has to be with the water or in the drum prior to the wash to be lifted through the holes so as to match the drum hole pattern.
The marks shown were on the front of a baby grow which could support this theory but the source of the dirt concerns me?
Although the user is using warm washes (as does everyone else nowadays), she is using a good quality detergent.

No.
If there’s something already on the clothing that can “attract” or retain the dirt in the wash then it will do so and not be washed away as it should be.
There can be other causes of course, hard to say for sure without seeing what it is but if it’s random and on multiple items then this or overloading etc and the primary suspects.
Even washing being sat on the kitchen floor can pick up spills etc that could cause this.
Essentially, if you can’t find any obvious fault with the machine then 99 from 100 or higher, it’ll be an external cause and you need to do a bit of detective work to figure out what it is.
This is as, the machine can’t cause it and, if it was the water supply the whole street if not area would have the same complaint, not just one person.

cheers Ken,
I going to get the tenant ask the neighbours, to eliminate the water supply as a possibility.
I have come across most of the other stains/marks on clothes before (overloading being the most common) but the only time I have seen this particular problem is when it is in relation to bearing failure.
I will go back and see what else I can deduce.March 15, 2017 at 10:52 am #446068johnnyj

i remember years ago cust complaining of rust marks on some clothes, i checked everything sump changed drum the lot still getting them, it turned out it was caused by the new hot water tank that had been installed and her still having a coal fire copper was coming in through the hot water feed and reacting with the dyes in these clothes i converted to cold fill problem solved.
