I’m posting this not because I need help in solving a problem, but because I managed to solve it using other posts on this forum and I figured it might be useful to someone else if I described what I did.
So I wake up and notice the power was off. I trace this down to the circuit which feeds only the washer/dryer. With all the switches on the washing machine front panel set to off, if I plugged the machine in, the breaker would immediately pop.
I opened the machine up (unplugged) and scouted around for stray water and charred things but found none. Then I looked for components which would receive power regardless of the front panel switch settings and noticed the supressor mounted at the back of the machine right next to the incoming power cord. It seemed to have some sticky liquid on the top surface and this was spread between one of the power terminals and the earth post. Ah-ha!
So now I run some searches on this forum for the part number of the supressor (630501) and find two posts:

Having read those I chose to buy one of these (mentioned in one of the posts):

I swapped this in and normal service is resumed. Another victory for whitegoods.co.uk!
