ParticipantMy fridge would not work and I changed the thermostat which was a Ranco for the Varifix VT9. I fitted the new thermostat last night and this morning the milk was frozen inside the fridge it now seems that the fridge is permanently on. I wired the new thermostat up as per the old thermostat (using the terminal numbers) is that correct? Our does the VT9 have an extra terminal?
Any ideas?Thanks in anticipation.

KeymasterIs it a fridge with an ice box or without?
This is where model numbers help. 😉

Where did you get the thermostat? The reason I ask is that it sounds as if you’ve gotten the wrong thing in all honesty.
A lot of the newer machines, from about the mid-nineties on, you can’t use a VT9 in as the cut in/out is too low on them so you need one that’s suitable for the application. Some even just MUST have the original stat fitted or it won’t be right. A lot of people assume that all fridge or freezer stats are the same and, this is incorrect, there are huge variances in them.
I can’t check it tonight as I don’t have access to the information at home, but someone here may be able to help further.

Either the capillary end isnt contacting the evaporator or the wiring is wrong. Look under the lid at the front model number may be there.
Unplug power if you are going in.

When I installed the switch and thermostat I secured the end of the probe using the two screw bracket so that it is held between the bracket and the back of the metal plate inside the fridge is that correct?
Also from memory I think that there was an extra terminal on the switch but I only used the numbered ones on the “old” switch

I have now bought a genuine Hotpoint thermostat and when I install the switch and thermostat do I just secure the end of the probe using the two screw bracket so that it is held between the bracket and the back of the metal plate inside the fridge or this there further places behind the metal plate to secure the long probe?

MDE and forum moderators,
Thanks for the forum and MDE for your help, I’ve now fitted a genuine Hotpoint thermostat and the fridge works fine.
Next question – Know anywhere where I can purchase a new rubber door seal?
