Hotpoint Mistral Frost Free

Problem started several weeks ago when the top compartment temperature started to rise, we have it set at +2C. When I removed the freezer compartment fan/evaporator cover I discovered that the evaporator was frosted up.

Without doing any fault diagnosis (Lack of knowledge) we called round and it was suggested by several people that the problem could be one of the following parts. I have so far replaced the following parts all to no avail:

1. Evaporator heater/defrost coil
2. Thermistor that sits just inside the fan/evaporator cover (Black plastic coated)

Planning to change the thermistor in the top compartment next, although this could be working fine, I have basically no idea!

If any one could help me to turn our freezer back in to its frost free state I would be very grateful.

Hi Paul,
Does the evaporator fan run at all, if not before you go any further and start replacing parts just check that the door is closing correctly and aligned straight with the top facia and that the fridge compartment light goes out.

It sounds to like the thermal fuse has blown stopping the evaporator defrosting shorting out this for a few seconds it should start up

Hi paul jackfrost again I made a shorting device from an a duff thermal fuse and plugged this into wiring harness

dont know if you have solved this prob yet but have you tried hoovering out the area below the front grill,if this is clogged up with dust/doghair it wii prevent f/f from working prop/ also fan will not work untill frz evap reaches about -15

Hi and thanks for the replies not touched the fridge following the original post. This was following a manual de-frost and the fridge is running fine although fairly soon it will frost up again.

Answers to your advice/help below:

Bob – Evaporator fan runs and the door alignment/sealing is good. Forgot to mention the fridge compartment light, several days after replacing the parts mentioned above power to the light failed, thought the bulb had blown, new bulb didn’t work so tested the supply.

Jackfrost – I will test the thermal fuse, can you let me know what this looks like/where I can find this please. If this has in fact blown will a fault of caused this? Or can I just get hold of a new one and replace?

Funkyboogy – Good point, the first thing I checked was this and as you probably guessed it was full of dust and corruption, so I hoovered and made clean again. Could this of caused the problem we are having?

An update: The fridge is running fine at the moment just will not defrost.

normaly the thermal fuse is fixed to L/hand side of the evaporator about 7/8inch dia most give up without a problem or fault heater may have got to hot might not occur again

It’s actually an FF92BL.

I would recommend in this case an engineer is called to diagnose the problem for you.

I cannot condone shorting out thermal fuses, they are there for a reason and that reason in this case is safety, if the defrost heater were to overheat for any reason, there is a serious risk of fire as the insulation behind the evaporator would also get very hot.

a slight misunderstanding has occured Idid not mean to imply to short out thermal fuse as a repair only to use as a service tool to help find fault Iwould not in any circumstance advocate shorting out fuses
as a repair

I read your post as a diagnostic step, although looking at the cost of a new thermal fuse a 3mm bolt would be cheaper… This is a joke

So to summarise, as no one has referred to the replacement of the fridge thermistor I will check out the thermal fuse
