ParticipantHello,
Firstly – how do I post photographs onto the forum? In the meantime I’ve emailed them to Penguin45 so hopefully he can put them on for me.
I have taken a photo of the inside of my fridge freezer (Hotpoint Mistral FF92S). I was hoping you could give me your opinion if this looks normal? I’ll explain the background details first.
Fridge compartment temp went to +20. I called an engineer to repair. The freezer was iced up. He defrosted it using a hairdryer. Vacuumed out the grill at the front. He replaced the evaporator fan as he said this was the fault. He charged me £53.
3 months later the temperature of the fridge rose again. I tried to contact the original engineer but he was unavailable at the time so I called a different engineer. The second engineer took the cover off the inside of the freezer & to my surprise told me the first engineer had not replaced the evaporator fan. He had re-wired the thermister to bi-pass the PCB. He wouldn’t touch it & advised me to call the original engineer again. I reported it to trading standards who also advised me to give him a chance to put things right.
The first engineer came again, (I didn’t mention to him about having someone else to look at it). He took the cover off & defrosted the freezer compartment again using the hairdryer. He did nothing else, I know because I watched his every move. He said it should be ok now as the ice had pushed the cover away so wouldn’t work properly. He attempted to charge me about £25. I refused to pay because he should have fixed it properly the first time. So he ended up leaving without a penny.
I thought I would just see how it goes, if I needed to defrost it every 3 months or so I would put up with that. However it only lasted about a month, then temperature rose again. Engineer said it is most likely the PCB (the brain of the fridge as he called it) needs replacing. Now the engineer is refusing to come out, and advised me to defrost it when it freezes using a hairdryer.
It’s got worse now, the fridge temp starts to rise every 4-5 days. The freezer is fine at around -18. I defrost using the hairdryer which only takes me about 10mins.
I’ve read the forum “Hotpoint Mistral Temperature problems” in order to see if there is something else I can do to repair it as I don’t trust the engineers anymore. I was about to order the green & yellow thermistors, thinking that would be worth a try. However I’ve come across some photos (on page 6 of the forum) & I’ve compared these to my photos. I know I have been told by the second engineer already about the wiring but wasn’t sure weather he was just trying to give the other engineer a bad name, making stories up etc. But now I can see the difference with these pics. Do the wires I am holding look like a cowboy job? Also one of the white wires from the large white plug on the far right appears to have been cut.
Now I am more cautious about changing any parts myself, what do you think would be my best course of action?
Thank you

Mike has copied me the above post – I regret that I’m no fridge tech, so I’ll leave any advice to the rest of the lads in the morning. Mike’s pics are attached below:
