ParticipantHello
I have a brand new built in Hotpoint SA2 540 H IX and I am experiencing something strange that I have never seen with an oven before.
When the oven is turned on to ‘Conventional Bake’ and the temperature set to say 180 or 200 deg, during the process of the oven getting up to temp, the fan seems to momentarily “power down” or audibly dip.
The oven does get up to temperature and we can cook food without any problem, however the issue persists throughout the cooking process and it is very annoying.
The power supply is not the issue, as the clock and light stay on – but this audible dip is most unusual in my mind.
To Hotpoint’s credit they did send an engineer and they replaced the main board today; but the same issue is still evident. The engineer simply said that it was due to the type of electronics they use and no two ovens are the same? I thought this was an unusual statement to make.
In addition, the engineer could not provide me with a functional reason as to why the oven behaves in this way.
If anyone has any thoughts, they would be most welcome.

KeymasterI don’t know the oven but, best guess logically….
It uses the fan to get it up to an even temp perhaps then cuts it as you’re using what I’d assume to be convection cooking, not fan assisted.
If it’s the cooling fan, some are variable and absolutely should do that as they’ll only ramp up as required. A bit like the cooling fan/s in a computer or car, they only work when they need to.

ModeratorWe have been asked this a couple of times recently and yes K is right.
It also helps Hotpoint to reach it’s “A” energy efficiency requirement by cutting the fan in and out.

ParticipantHi all,
I am new to this forum and stumbled across this thread from a google search,
I have the exact same oven Hotpoint SA2540HIX with exactly the same happening – could you please confirm if you got this rectified or whether it is deemed to be normal for the oven fan to do this??
many thanks

ParticipantMorning
Similarly I stumbled across this thread too. Mine intermittently drops about for a second or so too. Sounds like either a common fault or they just do it!!
Cheers

Moderatorits correct
old way
fan runs all the time and the element cuts in and out to keep temp correctnew way
fan and element are on till unit gets to temp then both cut out till temp drops at which point they both start up again. What they are doing is saving the power the motor draws so saving energy

ParticipantThanks Dave. I understand but like the thread suggests – the fan cuts out for like 1 second and then back in again for a couple of mins and then same pattern. Does this even if you turn temperature down as well
No issues with heating at all. Just odd the way it stops for a second then carrys on
Thanks for reply

DaveI thought the whole idea of a fan oven is that the fans circulates the air to keep the temperature constant throughout the oven cavity. If the fan is going on and of that won’t work as well will it?
For the small amount of power the fans draws (30W?) I’d rather have it running all of the time.December 20, 2020 at 10:58 am #466363electrofix
Moderatorthink they have reduced the vent holes to allow the oven top stay warm longer
its all about energy and carbon reduction these days
