Hotpoint oven fan & light won’t turn off

Hotpoint EW85. Fan oven stopped working (fan, oven light & theromstat light still on). Replaced clearly unwell element no problem. On switching cooker on and testing main oven – heard noise from switch area which sounded like something electrical blowing. Oven continued to work fine. But now oven fan and light will not go off even when oven control is switched off.
On applying electrical power to cooker, as soon as timer buttons are touched oven fan & light fire up.
Can anyone explain please.

I’m beginining to think this is the timer module that’s gone…sounds expensive? Can anyone advise please.

Selector switch very likely candidate – turn to charcoal very easily. Inspection requires oven to be removed from housing and the top removed – with the power off. If you don’t feel confident, check the link below for an engineer in your area.

Thanks for the suggested cause of the problem. I did get an engineer in and he needs to confirm with the circuit diags, but he’s suggesting either the selector switch or thermostat is at fault.

Apparently this type of problem is very common after an element failure. The suggestion was that arcing caused by the element as it fails can cause arcing in the selector switch which welds some of the terminals together.

I’ll advise the final outcome when known.

Fault confirmed and fixed…it was the selector switch. One of the two contacts had welded closed. Engineer thought it might be thermostat and that was replaced too, maybe unecessarily. Cost £70.

All due to the main oven element blowing…total cost of event $93.50. Expensive element!!!
