ParticipantHi,
I recently fitted a new thermostat to my Hotpoint RL64P fridge. I have done this once in the past without issue, but this time for some reason it just seems that the compressor remains on, and the fridge gets colder and colder. I have the thermostat set to 1, and it still doesnt seem to reach whatever temperature it is trying to reach. Last night it was down to -4 before I turned it off as it didn’t seem to show any signs of stopping
If I turn the thermostat control until it clicks, the compressor does turn off.
Could someone provide advice of where and how I should locate the ‘wire’ from the thermostat? I had it loose behind the ‘plate’ on the back wall of the fridge, surely that is going to be coldest place in there? And that is where the original was located.
Any advice appreciated.
Cheers
Russ

check the capilary tube ( wire from thermostat) for kinks as this would cause exactly your problem if it is then it will need a new thermostat again im affraid

The last 6 inches of the thermostat capilary needs to be attached to the plate (evaporator) assembley for correct operation of the thermostat, there should be a clip of some kind to keep it clamped to the evaporator.

Blimey you guys are quick! 😀 And thank you for the proper terminology for my ‘wire’ and ‘plate’ hehe.
i’m hoping it’s not your scenarion smartin. I have put a pic of the capillary online:

I dont think it has any kinks that would cause issue in it? just bends?Bob, there are a couple of screws down at the bottom the the evaporator that seem to have a clip of some sort behind them, so I’ll try and get the capillary fitted there. So does the thermostat actually switch on off at very cold temps if it is attached to the evaporator, rather than the actual ‘room temperature’ of the inside of the fridge?

yes where the screws are where the plate is and the last 2 inches of the capilary needs to be sandwiched in between the plate and the evaporator it relies on touching it to give an acurate reading

right, I got round to doing that tonight, so I’ll let you know how it goes. I was a bit worried about pulling the evaporator away from the back wall enough so that i could see where to sandwich the capilary. It seemed to be ok though, the pipe attached to the evaporator seemed to have enough give in it.
Thanks for your help, and I’ll report back soon with the results
cheers
