ParticipantHi All
The Hotpoint RLA 80 larder fridge is defrost free but every week I have to empty the trap underneath as it gets full and overflows, the engineer has been out 3 times but says there is nothing wrong (he changed the thermostat the last time, but its still the same. The only way I found out this problem it was warping the laminated flooring underneath the fridge,so must have been happening for a while .The fridge is 1 Year old.
Anyone else have this problem, and is there a cure. Its still under warranty.
ThanksJanuary 30, 2005 at 6:13 pm #124669eastlmark

Are you keeping anything unusual in it Jay651? Have you seen the tray overflowing or just guessing that is the case? The tray could be split or the pipe leaking.
There should never be that quantity of water in there.January 30, 2005 at 6:34 pm #124670DAZ123

Check to make sure the door is sealing properly and has not dropped, try to cover any liquids, also make sure the fridge temp is not too low to prevent excessive condensation on the rear wall of the fridge. Check the tray to make sure is level or not distorted

Thanks for quick reply, normal stuff in fridge.I think the water is supposed to evaporate away as the tray is on top of the motor, thats where the problem is,it does’nt go away and eventually just builds up then overflows. As i said in the last post the flooring was warping underneath,if is was lino I probably would’nt have noticed. If it was wood it would eventually rot away and the fridge would disappear down a big hole.(where I think its heading for If I dont find a cure0

You’re correct John, the heat from the motor should cause the water to evaporate.
How close is the tray to the top of the motor ?
I know of one other manufacturer that had them positioned incorrectly causing exactly this complaint.

The tray is about half an inch from the motor, the engineer did try and make it kind of level (very flimsy so hard to do) and I will remove over half a litre of water every ten days, and if not will overlow

I probably should have asked before but is the tray warm, or more importantly the water in it ?
Most evaporation trays are sat right on top of the compressor with no gap, so, is there a cold air draught behind it causing the air between them to cool ?
It sounds to me as if there’s not enough heat there to cause evaporation 😕
