Hotpoint s14 854 p ix rcd maybe not element?

A couple of months ago the oven popped the rcd with a very loud bang. The oven bulb had blown and once replaced was fine but didn’t seem to heat as well took longer to heat.

fast forward decided to use the self cleaning. Worked fine no problem. Though this is the odd thing when I sprayed the touch panel with cleaner a ‘secret’ menu opened with the option of switching to Fahrenheit but then also flashed up 13a or 16a. I don’t think I changed anything. Though now the oven trips when using any function with the bottom element. Grill and fan element work fine.

I’m assuming it’s a coincidence and just needs a bottom element (though the 2 retailers locally are surprised it’s gone on a 3 year old oven) but I’m worried 16a means 16amps and I’ve changed it to that? Hotpoint customer service just wanted to send an engineer.

ok first what trips.

a fuse board has 2 types of trips. MCB ( minature circuit breaker) that react to current and controls only one circuit and RCD ( residual current device) that reacts to earth fault and controls multiple circuits. There are some later ones called RCBO there are 2 in one

what i am suapecting is the RCD. It has a test button on it. if thats the one your element is most likely but to be sure you would need to test its insultaion to earth when hot

the lower element seems to be priced around £19 which is not a problem if your wrong

Thanks sorry my terminology and limited knowledge! The oven is on a 13amp plug. It’s on what appears to be shared with the kitchen sockets including the appliances.

Its labelled rcbo has a test switch on top which if you press flicks it over. We’ve had the washing machine, toaster, kettle all running on the same circuit at the same time with no problems.

The turbo grill which I think is the top element and the fan works fine it just trips shortly after switching the oven (as in top and bottom elements on).

ok look at the rcbo. it will have a rated current on it

the rcbo is a combined device. it can detect both over current and earth faults. you say your cooker has 13a and 16a settings but my guess is the rcbo is at leat 16a and very possibly 32a. therefore its an earth fault that likely tripping it

I would swop the element and see where it goes

Thanks I’m hoping it’s the element, none of manuals mention how to switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit or 13a and 16a but it was definitely on the screen! Hotpoint customer service couldn’t tell me how to access the menu I accidentally entered and a Hotpoint retailer had never heard of it happening so I’m hoping it’s just a coincidence and it is the element.

thanks for your advice, looking at videos it looks like the element simply slides out and then back in. Is it that simple or are there mounts that need lining up?

some elements slide under lugs but just take care removing it and it should not be too much of a problem
