I know how much you old ‘uns cherish your memories of these things. This one’s in very good nick still and drum bearings aren’t showing much slack. Noise seems to be emanating from that flywheel mounting area. It sounded a bit like a loose fan blade might have done but the fan is tightly mounted. Can’t feel any wear in flywheel or jockey wheel bearings. I’ve told the old dear to hang on for a week before going out to look for a new one. The machine looks robust enough to go for another ten years. Any ideas?
Serial no. is 81108/62. How old does that make it?
I won’t be around here much over w/end so hope I’ve given you enough info..
    TIA,
    Mike.

I’d be more worried if it wasn’t making a noise Mike! Transfer pulley bearing most likely candidate – no parts anymore of course, so it’s make do and mend time.

The phosphur – bronze bushes in the reduction pulley (2 belt thing) used to wear and turn in the worn pulley body. This sets up a vibration through the base. Quite often you would remove a pulley with no worrying slack and the bushes were ready to fall out. Could be that? Think it’s unlikely to be available anywhere – I haven’t seen one (as a spare) for years +++!!!
It would take all the metal used in 50 modern Merloni machines to make that part!! 😆
If it is a purple door bowl model, could be 30 years easy. Now that’s enviromentally friendly!! 8)

lots to be noisy! all of previously mentioned plus motor bearings which can be replaced from a bearing stockist. check tub front fixings (metal front) might need tightening

p.s. watch out for relay its gravity sensative!

The frightening thing is, back then we thought they were poorly made, not up to the standards of the Empress. 😉 😆
My guess as to the age of a date code 62 would be around Feb 1974. 🙂
