KeymasterI took your advice and changed the thermostats on my hotpoint tumble dryer and the heat is now back on, But the active light is still on constant as it was before, whats causing that any ideas? Also when the heat stopped working there was a slight burnt smell now ive replaced the thermostats its still coming out a little bit but not sure if thats just from before and the heat is bringing it out . But the dryer appears to be heating normally.

Is the active light on even when the machine is plugged in but not in use?
A slight burning smell just after working on the dryer could be disturbed dust or fluff burning off on the elements. It should not persist for more than a minute or so. If it does, then after removing the mains plug check for lint or fluff build up around the element and if possible use a vac to clean it. Take great care near the elements, they are fairly delicate. It is not a bad idea to remove the top at the same time and vac out any fluff that you can see. Getting further into the machine to clean is not something that you should really attempt yourself.

Could you clarify which button you are calling “active” do you mean the ‘drying’ neon. If this is on when you say it is then this is a fault I have encountered, once and it was caused by a faulty control (dryness) module keeping the heater on all the time. The heater should be disabled when the drum rotates anti clockwise. If the stats have failed as quickly as this then it sounds like job for an experienced engineer. I will check on the price of the module and post back.
This module is approx £70 + vat. If the appliance is under 5 years old a call to Hotpoint to take advantage of your 5 year parts g/tee is the best course of action.

Thanks for your information on my problem, there are 3 lights on my dryer
1. Active
2. Drying
3. Empty water
I do apologise it is the drying indicator which is stuck on at mo not the active, the active is lit when on but the drying one only usually comes on when its got the heat coming through then it goes off for a few seconds on a cooler spin but at the moment the drying light is constantly lit.March 22, 2005 at 11:12 pm #129737iadom

Time to call in the experts, almost certainly a dryness module failure, this would account for the rapid stat failure, the heater is on even when the motor is not running and when it is reversing.
Because the fans in this machine only ‘blow’ in a clockwise direction, the heater should be switched off when the drum runs anti clockwise for a short period to help prevent tangling.

I checked on the earlier thread from this poster to ascertain which type of appliance was involved .

How old is the dryer, if it is under 5 years old I would strongly recommend that you contact Hotpoint. The dryer neon should be off whenever the motor reverses, it should not be on all the time.

If as I suspect the heater control relay which is mounted on the Dryness module has stuck then the cost of this module together with another set of stats will cost you just short of £100. The possibility of sourcing a second hand module or a recon are very remote due to the age of the machine and the very rare failure of this module. There is a very slim chance that the rotary control unit is at fault, this is around £25 but my money would definately be on the module.

I wonder if net 0159 has made this observation?
