ParticipantHi all,
Our “dryer” has been having several problems over the last 12 months or so. Firstly it stopped heating altogether which seemed to be the result of overheating (caused a build-up of fluff) causing the fuses to blow. I replaced these and cleaned out the fluff and all was well… Well, for another couple of months.
It stopped heating again so I immediately assumed the same problem and ordered another fuse kit, cleaned it out and replaced the fuses. No joy. The one thing I did notice was that the “Drying” light would come on for a split second when I started a cycle but immediately switch off. I put it back together awaiting my dad (a proper electrician) to come and have a look at it. When I had got it back together, I turned it on and it worked (“Drying” light came on and stayed on and it produced heat).
Since then, this problem has been intermittent and could usually be solved by “fiddling” (turning knob on & off, opening & closing the door, giving the top panel a “gentle tap”). That is up until yesterday.
As of yesterday, the “Drying” light is constantly on whenever the dryer is “ready” (door closed and programme selected) to be started. Upon starting the machine it doesn’t appear to be heating.
Finally, I’m pretty sick of this piece of junk and would like suggestions for something that actually works as its supposed to. So, what’s the best condensing dryer available for say £500.
However, in the meantime, we’ve a 2 week old baby so any tips/advice to help get me up & drying in the short-term would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Andy.October 5, 2008 at 11:35 am #264290akilgore

I’ve just been reading the posts of similar problems with other Hotpoint dryers. Could this be a problem with the front thermostat (just inside the door)?

Just had her apart and prodded the dryness module a bit which resulted in it going back to the state whereby the drying light comes on briefly at the beginning of a cycle.
So I figured the chances are that one of the relays on the board was at fault. Took the module out and look for any obvious faults. Upon not finding any, I did the usual give it a blow and pressed the relays to the board a bit. Stuck it all back together and now it “thinks” its drying but it’s not generating any heat.
Going to check the rear fuses next…

Currently looking at the Zanussi ZDC67550W – seems like a good enough machine?
Alternatively, is it worth going the full hog and buying something like the ISE (or an equivalent alternative)? And, if it is, any ideas on how I go about getting an ISE in Northern Ireland (BT6)?October 5, 2008 at 1:51 pm #264295helo_75
