Keymasterhello,
I have a Hotpoint TL51P tumble dryer.
It was not working. The drum (empty) would not turn- when I helped the drum to spin it moved a little and then stopped.
So, I stripped it down and disconnected the belt from the motor and ran it again.
The motor spun at speed and then slowed a little and then sped up again.Anyway, I took the motor apart and the ROTOR (squirrel cage type) shows a little arcing on the surface.
I cleaned it and reassembled. It ran fast and slow again.
then the capacitor exploded!
I do not think I put the capacitor back on wrong as there is no polarity marked on it. ( see also viewtopic.php?f=34&t=12597)
Capacitor:
ARCOTRONICS
1.27.4WC2 MKP
7,5 uF +/- 5 {e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} bI think what has happened is that over the years too heavy a load was put into the dryer which caused too much load on the motor and weakened the capacitor.
So my questions:
Would the erratic running of the motor be attributable to a capacitor problem or more the rotor? Can someone confirm if polarity needs to be observed on the capacitor?
Could a reverse polarity be the cause of the capacitor exploding? I connected the two red wires to one lug and the brown to the other as was before. I don’t know if I connected them to the lugs to which they were connected before I disconnected them.Or was the capacitor just weak and blew?
can anyone recommend a good online shop to get the capacitor?
thanks

probably looking too deep, chances are capacitor had worn, and hence went. the initial faults before blowing were the indications it was on its way out.
buy the cap from here. and dont worry too much about the extra 1/2 farad

Thanks for your help!
I thought that the capacitor was on its last legs alright!
I take it there is no issue with polarity on these caps?

never had any issue with polarity. just make sure you dont do the school boy error of putting them both on the same leg if theyre both double terminals!
if polarity was to be observed it would be moulded in or stamped on the lable…
