ModeratorComplaint of no action, took lid off expecting to see belt snapped, but it was in place. turned on and it was obvious that belt was slipping. I tipped it over expecting a quick, five minute 1700442 belt change to find to my surprise it had the dreaded ‘stretchy belt’ on it. I had a bit of a fight to get a new belt back on.
Checking on Partfinder just now it does not mention anywhere that the late production of this model had a stretchy belt.
Its difficult to know wether or not to fit the later 9 rib 1703666 belt or the slightly bigger 1701658 belt, the numbers on the old belt were obscured.
The only machine on Partfinder that shows this belt is a TL52PI which is not labelled Hotpoint but Export, could be a ‘back of a lorry’ job lot. :rolls:
Date code 82. BTW.

The hotpoint TL 52 has the 170442 belt, but the TDL 52 has
the 1701658 stretch belt.

I am well aware of that 😉 , however this machine was definately a TL52, not a TDL 52. I do know my TL’s from my TDL’s. 🙂
If you have Partfinder look up TL52PI and you will see it comes up as ‘EXPORT, BROTHER 5kg reversing’.
This machine actually shows a stretchy belt and the machine I went to today definately had a stretchy belt. The machine had not been touched before and there was no sign of any wear around the jockey pulley slots.
Perhaps one of the Hotpoint/Indesit lads could confirm that late model TL dryers do have stretchy belts.

I’ve known a few engineers who have lobbed the Jockey pulleys away, and replaced with a stretchy belt either bcause they didint have the correct belt or replacement Jockey pulleys on the van, because of pressure of RFT from above.

This one had no signs of previous jockey pulleys at all, model was a TL52P, Hotpoint Ist Edition.
Just spoken to customer on the phone, purchased from Currys, never been touched before today.

You are right Jim the later models(after DC79) had elasticated belt 1701658 fit to them, and they are prone to overstretching.
ps pre DC79 has 1700442 fit.January 31, 2008 at 8:16 pm #241715iadom

I would have converted it to pulley type belt but didn’t have the small spring to fit between the pulleys, unfortunately I fitted a 1703666, not a 1701658, no wonder it was a bit tight, seemed to run OK though. 🙂 Will be back to fit new rear bearing in six months.
Pity this info doesn’t appear to be in our copy of Partfinder.

For the money they charge Partfinder should come in a gold plated box.
Have you ever seen a copy of the £25.00 Electrolux group TDS disc. 100 times better than Partfinder at a third of the price. :rolls:
Come the revolution 😉 😀

There should be a new 2008 version out soon, Most of the regular spares outlets can get hold of it. If not then I’m sure our very own spares guru 😀 Dave Conway would be able to oblige. 8)

Do you guys replace the bronze bearing at the back when you change the machines with the stretch belts? Most i call to have wear on them and when they wear through a groove starts to wear into the shaft and it snaps 8)

I usually whip the drum out of the vented machines micky, easy enough to do & lets you do a total de-fluff. Most need a shaft /bearings/seal kit to let you give any sort of guarantee i find.. Bloody terrible pile of price driven tin foil but earns us a crust eh ? 😉
