Think there were two types of shoes, are you sure you’ve fitted the correct ones? I think i remember if the incorrect ones were fitted it causes overheating.

Later models, 😕 Good grief the 151201 has been the correct clutch assy for over 30 years.
Todays history lesson. 😉
Old Hotpoint part numbers.
Beginning with 10/11/12/13 are for wringer machines.
14 is for twin tubs
15 is for top loaders
16 is front loaders
17 tumble dryers
18 dishwashersLife was oh so simple then. 8) 😀
Did you just change the shoes or the complete clutch assy, that is the two shoes complete with the alloy bar?
Cannot really offer much on the burning smell on wash, if the clutch shoes were the wrong way round the motor overload should trip in no time at all. If the pump was siezing or the belt was slack that should also be obvious.
As for poor/no spin, a worn clutch is number one, then stiff or seized gearbox, brake lever not releasing, bendix drive inside gearbox failed giving a wash action when on spin, intermittent lid switch operation, pressure switch or push button switches faulty, ( try flipping the full/half load switches in and out when machine is set to spin and switched on, if you can hear the brake solenoid firing on & off then the the bank of switches are faulty), also non gen clutch shoes are generally not up to the job.

Brake solenoid not working would be fairly obvious but it is not unknown for the brake lever to stick intermittantly due to wear on the lever.
One way we used to overcome this was to add a second spring to help pull the lever OFF.

Memory serves me right, experienced similar problems back in 93 -94 they changed to a higher torque slightly larger clutch assembly, still same number 151201
#1 Last time I experienced this I replaced the clutch housing assembly including clutch, cheaper alternative than new motor if still available?
#2 Check the brake adjustment by removing the bung on the cabinet side and adjust as necessary.April 7, 2008 at 9:56 pm #247863iadom

Given the model number of this machine it will already have the larger clutch pulley. As long as the correct genuine clutch shoes are fitted the problem lies elswhere.
PS. This type of pulley conversion kit and clutch assy was introduced before I left Hotpoint in 1980. 😉
