Hotpoint tumble dryer CTD00 drum not turning

Hi the drum in our tumble dryer Hotpoint CTD00 has stopped rotating when switched on – the dryer makes a humming noise as if it is waiting to kick in.I have removed the top and side, the belt looks to be in good condition and there is no slack. If I switch on and turn the drum by hand through the open top the drum starts rotating and working by itself.
Any ideas folks?

It needs a new capacitor, but of more concern, have you checked your appliance on the Hotpoint/Indesit web site. I am pretty sure you have one of models that is the subject of a massive nationwide ‘recall’ due to a fire risk.

Thanks for the quick reply, I will get a new one on order ( I couldn’t find a specific one on this site).

Is there anything to be wary of when replacing capacitors?

You were right about this model it’s one on the recall list. A little worrying as we’ve had it 11+ yrs.

Your machine can have a 7.5, 8.0 or even an 8.5 uf capacitor. The rating is on the side and all of those are in the shop.

Simple change over.
