Im fed up with putting belts and bearings into the VTD type hotpoint dryers.
I replaced the latest disaster with new bearings and shaft etc. then mt EURICA moment came and i replaced the belt with an 1897 j3 type from a white khight which gives no trouble. It fits and works very well and should also save the bearing in the WELLING motor from early failure. The motor/belt ridges are not perfect on this mod and only time will tell if this is a problem.
The main downside of this is that it wont get me a flat in monte carlo or a mention in the new years honours list.SUCH IS LIFE!!

An 1897J3 belt is hardly a solution and I would imagine would fail in fairly short order. Besides it isn’t a stretch belt and the J3 ridges will be chewed up by the drive pulley after just a few uses. The spirit of the bodge isn’t dead but it’s back to the drawing board on this one I fear. 🙁

So long as the whole hit is fitted including the washer on drum shaft I don’t remember going back to one

I reckon that the 1897 j3 is a stretch belt as fitted to the white knight dryers, and, if the idea works at all I will try to get the same belt with the appropriate ridges and treat myself to a life of ease.

An 1897EJ3 is a stretch belt however an 1897J3 isn’t. Neither are suitable in this case however. 🙁

The OEM replacement belt is now an 1860 9PHE which is 9 grooves wide, stretch up to size and ‘H’ section smaller flatter grooves. The factory fitted part was 7PHE with seven grooves.
The ‘J’ section belt grooves are completely different angles and dimensions; there are only three of them and they will not generate enough traction between belt and pulley on the already stupidly small contact area. So as much as it is great to hear alternatives to the cr@p parts that are OEM, I’m afraid I have to concur with Martin. 😐

I hate it when that happens too. 😉

Have to agree with Martin & Aqualectric as the belts are different profile. Anyone found a fix for the later version drum which has the non replaceable bearing shaft, seeing lots and having to buy new drums.Mk

Grind the remains of the shaft off then fit new one as normal.

Anyone got a list/table/diagram which explains the different belt profiles in a little more depth, I know it has the number of ribs and the length marked on most belts but would be interested to know more about what the letters actually mean.

I’m thinking if doing a mod’ by using a bigger belt with a tensioner mounted onto motor end somehow.
Pressure from the elasticated belts damages rear drum bearing, motor bearing & busts belt.
    Bad design i’m afraid.

Qualtex did publish such a listing/catalogue which may still be available?

Personally I think your trying to solve a problem that don’t exists. The belt only snaps if the drum jams or the customer opens the door before the drier has done the cooling at the end of the cycle, overloading can have an impact but that eats the rear bearing, Iv had a HP vented drier personally for 5 year with 2 kids and Iv still never changed the rear bearing, I stripped it last year to remove lint and the bearing was hardly worn.

If the belt is snapping regularly its either Jamming and look for reasons for that or overloading/ misuse. Rapid bearing use is overloading.

As for the new drums you can drill the shaft off. Use 8 or 10mm bit and from the back drill the heads off the rivets and you can remove the whole plate and bolt the shaft on from the kit. One note on a very new one recently the holes underneath for the three bolts did not line up I just drilled it to suit.

I don’t agree about overloading doing the bearing, it’s only become a problem with the rear bearing since the jockey pulleys were removed and the new belt applied. Before then it never happened. I’ve had old ladies with worn bearings who haven’t got enough washing to overload it. Just a cost saving idea that Hotpoint/Indesit hope will last a year thereafter they can charge an exorbitant fee to repair. Unless we get the job.

Agreed, the dryer still has traces of the original Creda design from nearly 40 years ago in it. They had the small , square rear bearing in them, later the bronze bearing but even earlier a small square plastic bearing. Wear on the plastic bearing was only seen after many years of use and was never seen on the bronze bearing. I have a 15 year old TL61 that has only needed new jockey pulleys due to noise. The rear bearing is perfect as is the belt.

The high incidence of belt and rear bearing failures only started to occur ‘after’ the ultra tight belt was fitted. Users didn’t suddenly start overloading overnight, and I fail to see how stopping the machine mid cycle will affect the belt, stats yes, very common but the belt???

Extreme overloading may contribute to belt failure but the bearing/shaft problem is entirely due to the belt tension IMHO.
