Spinner drum is not turning. The clutch gets hot but either the motor is not going fast enough for the clutch to engage properly of there is too much resistance in the drum rotation. I’ve checked the brake adjustment and it’s not binding. It’s a long time since I worked on one of these so I can’t remember how easily the spinner drum should turn by hand. Any advice from our older members would be much appreciated!
I got some new clutch shoes 141186 but they appear to be the wrong ones as the pivot holes are too small. I cut some cross hatching on the old shoes to try and get more grip but it made no difference. The old shoes were not very worn anyway.

It’s always best to take the counterweight, clutch assy and brake disc off. Then lift the spin can out and check there’s nothing wrapped around the bellows seal. A smear of grease on reassembly then spin the can, it should spin with ease at that point. Reassemble the brake disc, clutch etc and check the brake band clears the brake disc once the lid it closed.

All should be well at that point to refit the belt and it’ll spin like mad I shouldn’t wonder! 🙂

Lid latch – microswitch mechanism needs checking too by the way. 😉

Suspect spinner bearing dried up also check that there are no clothes wrapped around spinner shaft .

Thanks gents, does the spinner drum lift out without removing the plastic surround?

Yup,if you look at the top of the spinner you will see a plastic ring,pull that out and away you go.
Lay the machine on its end so that the spinner is uppermoust,when you remove the pulley from the bottom of the spinner you will see that the counterweight has a keyhole slot in it,make sure this is pointing up before you remove the weight or else you will lose the pin.

Don’t be tempted to try the spin motor with machine on it’s side. (Not that you would, I’m sure.) I had a friend who did this once many years ago and the motor burst into flame.

It was just the drum shaft that had gone rusty and was stiff to turn in the seal. I cleaned the shaft and inside the seal and greased it but I had a job lining up the shaft with the carbon face seal. After about 100 attempts It went in and I tried the machine. It now spins OK but the water pours out from under the machine. One of my failed attempts at centring the shaft in the face seal must have punctured the bellows seal :bang: I’ve never been any good at judging level, squareness, concentricity etc so I hope I don’t do the same trick with the new seal. I might see if i can rig up a mirror on a string that I can position to see the shaft as it goes down. 🙁

Normally its easy to insert the spinner shaft back into the bellows seal, never had any problem doing that. Mind you I always for whats its worth lower the spin can gently until you feel the shaft making contact with the bellows seal, by careful placement you can feel when its on the hole and then insert it.

Its one of those jobs that the more of em you do the better you get at it !

Fortunately not had to do any substantial work on one of these for the last ten years or so, so this suggestion may be of little merit.
Would it be possible to attach a piece of string to the end of the shaft and thread it through the hole so you’d have something to help you line it up. Providing your arms are long enough or there’s someone around to help.

I must say that I will have inserted these shafts several hundred times over the years, never, ever had a problem lining them up. ❓

I’ve had a thought 💡 If I push a suitable length of thin walled rubber tube onto the threaded end of the shaft i can insert that through the seal while it’s still visible…..

It got me thinking about why anyone would find refitting the drum & shaft difficult. 😕

I wonder if Phidom is trying to do it with the machine tipped on its end.

I always returned the machine to the upright position to refit the spin can then laid it end on using the filter tray to keep it at an angle to prevent water spillage whilst refitting the clutch and brake drum.
