ParticipantHi my hotpoint WMA63 is not doing its final spin. It is spinning during the cycle and the water is pumping out . I have had the back off and cleaned / unblocked the waste pipes / pump , but this seems to have made no difference , which is surprising as this usally cures all its problems .
Has anyone got any ideas please ?
Many thanks pmacJanuary 20, 2008 at 4:05 pm #240390iadom

Have you tried the machine without a load of clothes in it to eliminate possible out of balance?

Thanks for the reply Jim , but it only had 2 of the wifes best tea towels in it (used for mopping up after cleaning out pump) . It has allways been a noisey machine – it makes a hell of a bang / jump when it starts to spin. As I said before it spins ok during the normal wash cycle ( all be it noisely) , but it just makes no effort to do the final spin . I would like to repair it , because it matches the fridge freezer and dish washer ( zircon silver) , and if I have to replace it , the new one would not match the other appliences , which the wife has already mentioned ! I could have to end up replacing all 3 , which I certainly don’t want to do.
Thanks again

You did not answer my question, 😉 Have you tried the machine on final spin completely empty? This would eliminate any possibility of the out of balance control preventing a spin. After that it does get a little more complicated and possibly expensive.
Is the drum noisy when you spin it by hand?
TBH I have exactly the same machine, it was very quiet when new but even though the drum bearings are perfect and it is whisper quiet on the wash, ( as quiet as any other machine I have ever seen with a brush gear motor including our own excellent ISE machines) it can be a little noisy on the full 1600 spin. I always reduce the final spin speed to 1200 or less but the wife just sticks it on and lets it whizz away at 1600. It does also jump on the odd occasion with a large towel load.
There is a rare fault on the ‘chopper board’ that can apparently cause this fault but I have yet to encounter that one.

I have not tried the machine empty , I will try it tomorrow . the drum spins quietly by hand and is quiet during normal wash cycle , however if you push the drum towards the back of the machine it will hit the rear case of the machine with a bang ! (you don’t have to push it hard either) . If you push the drum so it hits the rear caseing , then release it it will bounce forwards and backwards for several seconds (like a car with a knakered shock absorber – if that makes sense). I will post the results of the empty spin tomorrow.
Thanks for your help so far.

Easy back to front movement is quite normal and is nothing to worry about. It is quite simple to check the suspension units, unplug and tilt the machine back against a wall or cupboard. Shine a torch underneath and you will be able to see the two suspension units on either side of the drum, sometimes the plastic peg that holds the suspension unit to the drum can come adrift.
This is what it should look like.
Two towels when wet could easily cause out of balance condition.

Hi there
have just tried the machine empty , it would not do just a final spin on its own , but when I set it to ‘rinse and spin’ (30 min cycle) it ran through the cycle and did a final spin at the end . It was also very quiet during the cycle and did not knock or bang. It looks like you are right on the out of balance control . How do I cure this , or prevent it from happening again ? We have had the machine for about 6 years , and this has never happened before , and we have never taken particular care in loading the machine , just tend to bung it in !
Thanks again

It should spin on the spin only programme. I would check the suspension as mentioned earlier first. The only way to avoid Out of balance is to make sure you put a good sized load in the machine if you are washing heavy items such as towels, jeans, heavy sweaters, bath mats etc.
Just tried the 1600 spin on our machine. It counts down from 16 minutes to 13 minutes before it goes into spin.

Hi Jim
I have just tried the spin only cycle and it worked fine ! (TBH might not have set it properly first time) . I have had a good look at suspension and it seems ok , certainly not broken . Do the suspension / dampers / springs get weak after a time , if they do can you get spares , and is it worth replacing them ?
Many thanks for your help (and patience) with this.

Not had any problems with the dampers on these machines myself, other than the pegs coming adrift.

Filter partially choked? Water level control comes off the sump – slow drain causing slow re-set might throw spin out?

I think he did that just before his first post. 😉
I suspect he cleared the sump then threw a couple of wet towels in the machine leading to OOB.
