ParticipantHi ..My washing machine has given up on me this morning so looking for some guidance please.
Hotpoint ultima extra wma64.
Been running for over 10 years without any trouble but last night it was making a bit of a squealing noise whilst the drum has turning (slowly, not spinning fast).
Put a load in this morning and the drum will no longer turn.
I put it through the test program and the fault code is E32 (motor cut out open circuit)
Thanks in advance for any help.

Power unplugged then check the state of the motor.

Got the motor out, the brushes are worn down a lot(about 5mm left) but still in contact (resistance measured at the connector block is 4 Ohms). The motor moves freely.
Anything else to look for or do you think its the brushes?February 9, 2014 at 11:50 am #409269iadom

Look at the ends of the brushes, they should both be shiny, if one of the brushes is pitted, rough and dark then it’s time to change them.

At just 5mm long they are knackered anyway. The commutator probably will be in a poor state too and in need of a little TLC.

Thanks Guys.
Just had a good look at the brushes. One is longer than the other and the smallest one is only shiny across about a third of the surface.
I will get a new set. Whats the best way to clean up the commutator.

By buying a ‘comm stick’ which is a fine grade grinding block. Or alternatively extra fine grade emery paper. Fold a small piece and place in the vacant brush aperture whilst spinning the armature. To give the copper segments a very smooth even surface prior to fitting the new brush set. Also clear away as much carbon dust as possible from the plastic brush terminal mounts and stator windings.
