ParticipantI have a Hotpoint Ulitima TDC62 condenser dryer which works fine apart from no heat. I replaced the thermostats and it worked for a while then the same thing happened, so I replaced them again and again it worked. The heat has gone again- so that will be three new sets of thermostats in as many weeks. I dont have anything to test electrical currents etc I did however over ride the thermostats and noticed only one half of one of the four bars of the heating elements came on. Does mean that the heater is faulty and causing the thermostats to trip out? I don’t want to keep spending money on spare parts and repairs if its a new dryer I need.

For starters NEVER bypass those stats.
The One shot is blowing due to the drier over heating, this is caused by lack of air flow, is the condenser clean ? Possibly motor capacitor or reverse timer failure causing the motor to stop
Check airflow is clear, condenser clean
Check for correct motor action. Should turn clockwise for the longest then anticlockwise for very short period.
There should not be any delays longer than a few seconds when it changes directionAs for just one element was it on high heat ?

De fluffed everywhere, condensr, filter – I even took the sides off and cleaned everything so air flow should be good. The motor action seems fine- turning clockwise then briefly anticlockwise with no delay.
When testing by over riding the stats the dryer was set on a high heat.January 25, 2013 at 3:54 pm #388687iadom

Could be a faulty dryness module, if the new stat you fitted has a tiny hole in the back you can reset it it with a pin.
You then need to observe the red heat light on the front, it should not come on as soon as you turn the dial to a programme, only after the start button is pressed. It should also go off when the machine does its short, reverse tumble.
Cost of new module, around £100.00. 🙁
You should never run the machine with the back panel off either.

Theres no way to reset the stat that I can see. I assume by the heat light you mean ‘drying’ light. This is off until I press start then it comes on, goes off when it reverses and on again when it goes back. Does that mean the dryness module is ok?

Not necessarily but encouraging news anyway. If I recall correctly on this beast there’s a thermal cutout in the front drum support duct. That could be open circuit?

The motor capacitor could be failing, this would be more obvious with a heavy load, cheap enough to try anyway.
Failure of the front duct stat would not cause the rear toc to fail though. 😉

How would I know if the motor capacitor is failing- if the motor turns the drum and fan etc that all seems to be working fine.
This tumble dryer is about 7 years old, maybe its time to get a new one, as maybe its just wearing out now and things are just going to keep breaking? Ive seen a zanussi for £189- would this be worth considering or should I spend more- I only ever use one setting so I don’t need anything fancy!January 26, 2013 at 11:34 am #388692iadom

A failing capacitor will often allow the drum to rotate when empty but fail under load, sometimes after the machine has been running for some time. As I said, the capacitor is not expensive, so not a major punt if you try one.

As said here I’d swap the capacitor and stats and try again. Also check the air duct in the door where the filter goes, fluff builds up and blocks airflow.
