I have a problem with my WMA60. One of the lifters went so I replaced it (they seem to go all the time) but now when I program it to wash it will fill the drum will turn during normal wash but when it gets to a spin cycle the motor will speed up then slow down. It will try to spin again with the same effect and then the display changes back to ‘On’ with the lock light flashing. The machine will drain and then the door will eventually unlock.
Is this likely to be a PCB or motor problem? The brushes in the motor have been checked and look fine.
I received this as a replacement machine under an extended warranty guarantee for my previous Hotpoint WM (uneconomic repair) about 4 years ago so I’m unsure what the position is with the 5 year warranty as I have no proof of purchase.

Flashing light means that the out of balance system has been activated. This can operate on a nuisance basis when the machine gets older. If it’s a regular problem, the only real solution is a replacement computer board.

Personally I wouldn’t bother, due to expense – and there are far superior machines out there.

I’ve never seen the out of balance thing kick in before. What triggers this behaviour? Is there a sensor for this that can be replaced/overidden to prove it.
This has only happened since the lifter broke and was replaced so is it possible that something is wedged somewhere that is causing it?

While I have no love for it, I can get a control module cheaper than buying a whole new machine to tide me over until I can get something better.

Anything else I can do or try?

It is possible that something is stuck under the drum, you should be able to feel it restricting the rotation though. If your date code proves that the machine is under 5 years old then Hotpoint would repair it under their five years parts warranty. The date code is the first two numbers of the serial number on the door near the hinge. Maximum cost if they do repair will be a modest 🙄 £90.00, still a lot cheaper than a new machine, I have not yet had to change a module on this type of machine. Out of balance is measured by the control module, it senses the load on the motor as the clothes are lifted and then dropped down the other side, if the difference is to great then the machine will not spin. Absolutely no way to override, caused by washing single heavy items etc.

With regard to the lifters, one thing that will cause them to come adrift is washing trainers in the machine, that is a definate no no, on this type of drum. There is a correct way of refitting the lifters as well.

Failing that you could always try Repairs@ 😉
