hotpoint VTD00

just started having a burning smell on the clothes any ideas as to whats causing this. unscrewed the back and elements are all working but give a burning smell.

Does it indicate the elements are shot and news one is needed and if so is it a difficult job. Many thanks Terry

Most common cause is excessive fluff build up inside cabinet etc. Removal of side panels and heater cover and a good clean out with a vacuum cleaner would be first step. Possible that drum seals have failed which can lead to serious fluff build up inside dryer. Take care when cleaning the heating element, it is very frail.

Thanks have done that seemed to work. Today had the burning smell back stopped the dryer clothes were still rather hot was just wondering if thermastate may be breaking down. Would that cause the problem. Any help would be great. Thanks

If the thermostat was failing, the safety stat would trip and knock the heat off completely. Stopping the dryer with the heat on or running it without the rear cover is almost guaranteed to trip the safety, BTW.

As Iadom said, fluff build up is the commonest cause of burning smells. If you have cleaned out the heater area and around the drum, you need to consider the back of the drum itself – a surprising amount of stuff will accumulate there. You will have to remove the side covers and the locking wire on the shaft to allow the drum to slide forward.

Other possibilities include the drive motor starting to cook, or the start/run capacitor attached to it. These will give off a distinctive “hot electriccy/burning varnish” type of smell.

As ever, power off when investigating.

toke of back panel and no fluff motor had a build up which i cleaned.
run her again no panels on, and there is a slight smell at rear of drum but inside is ok.

is it possible that where the bareing are gone (have read many thread and have same scraping sounds other had) that the metal rubing on metal would cause the smell, or are we looking at the motor for defenite ?

p.s capaitor is ok nothing melted of burnt here.
