ParticipantWe’ve had this dryer for a few years now, and I replaced the rear bearing, belt and seals about 3 years ago. At the time, I checked the pads at the front of the drum for wear and they still had the moulded-in grid pattern visible so I left them.
The belt snapped again a few weeks back, and it seems to have been because the drum and belt had stopped turning so the motor spindle wore through the belt.
It’s just snapped again so I checked the drum rotation and it seems pretty stiff to turn by hand.
I checked the front pads and they are quite worn now so I’ve replaced with new and rubbed down the lip of the drum which runs on them and having put it all back together without the belt it STILL feels stiff to turn by hand – when I’ve looked at youtube vids of dryer repairs, the drums all seem to turn under their own inertia a little, only a small amount, but you can see it. This one doesn’t.
Questions:1) Is it supposed to do that or are they all a little stiff? (I guess that if the belt and motor were attached, the inertia in the motor might cause it to spin on a few degrees).
2) There’s a small gap between the inner felt seal and the drum lip at the top (1-2mm) which will obviously allow air and fluff out – it had been before as it was caked in the stuff but it seems that it ought to lightly rub on the drum all the way around. I’m sure I fitted it properly though – is that as it should be?

I don’t know of any dryer made in the last 10 to 15 years that will turn under inertia. you should be able to turn it with mild force but these do not spin, not even for a fraction of a second.
A full, genuine bearing and shaft kit will come with new front and rear bearings and seals, they should all be changed at the same time.

Ok, thanks for that. I’ll stick it all back together and see if it works then!

The belts on these do snap for fun at the best of times, far too much tension on them. 🙁
last year I fitted two belts to Hotpoint dryers, the first one was the third belt the 5 year old machine had required in under 12 months. The other belt was the first one that had ever been changed, that Hotpoint dryer was 27 years old. 😥

yeah, might be something to do with how much weight goes into them I guess. I could have bought a 60kg capacity one and ‘er indoors would still manage to cram it full…

Overloading doesn’t help but the biggest problem is extreme belt tension due to the removal of the jockey pulleys that older machines used to keep the belt under tension. Yet another retrograde, money saving modification. :rolls:

It does seem to be a rubbish system, I don’t know how the belts are applied in the factory, but when you fit a replacement, the stretch would seem to happen over 1/2 of the belt’s length max. Which can’t be good for its longevity.
I had another look at the drum and sprayed it with some silicone spray whilst turning it and it spins much more freely now, so once my suppliers have sent the correct length belt :rolls: I’ll see how it goes. -
