ParticipantHi Everyone,
Intermitent fault with Hotpoint Washer/Dryer.
Customer has just had new consumer unit installed.
The machine trips RCD, not every time the machine is on though. 4 out of 5 times the machine will do the complete cycle. then it will trip RCD. I’ve done an insullation resistance test on machine and all is okay. Changed supressor a while ago. could it be that? found no leaks any where. Any ideas?
Thanks

It’s usually the wires to the motor harness, either on the motor itself or where the harness leaves the cabinet. It’s often associated with a failed TOC on the top of the heater box as the heater is switched in the neutral.

There used to be a special mains suppressor just for sensitive RCDs.

You may have hit the nail on the head there, not sure if it is still available though. In the past 12 months I have had at least three late model WD’s with the much more reliable FHP motor tripping RCD’s . On all of them I have been unable to find any fault whatsoever, and never actually witnessed the RCD tripping. One was a
one month old machine in a school that had been fine until a complete building rewire. On one of the others I suggested that the customer had the RCD changed and that seems to have cured the problem.August 21, 2005 at 10:57 pm #145366simonb

go for wiring on this one, put a megger on earth and combined live and neutral and start by snipping all cable ties to machine, press and hold down megger test button move wiring from side to side and run your fingers through the wiring you will know when you have found the dodgy wire! megger with fluctuate and also what i can only discribe as a sort of sixth sense feeling will tell you, you found the wire!! 😯 😯 😯

Its a possibility that the wrong motor has been fitted from the factory, causing intermittent tripping of the rcd, especially on spin. Cant remember wether it should be a yellow label or green 😕 Had that a few times.

It’s quite common this one. When the mains finally switches off at the end of the prog, they often throw sensitive RCD’s as the switches inside the timer are badly burnt. Change the timer (in stock – tel 0115 9652118) and leave it 3 weeks before you send us the old unit. This gives the customer plenty of time to test the new timer and gives you the opportunity to re-fit the old unit if it does not correct the problem.

Hi Simon,
Thankyou for your advice.I’m well aware of the kick a megger can give. I’m not quite that silly. Thanks for your advice.
