KeymasterSlightly daft enquiry but i have the chance of a free Hotpoint washing machine WF840, but i am a bit short of space.
Its quoted as having a depth of 580mm. Does this measurement include the pipes, electrics and drum which sticks out of the back of the unit? Many thanks

the size given is that of the actual appliance, you must therefore give yourself normally at least 1 1/2″ behind the appliance for the waste pipe ect.

❓ I have just bought one of these (Hotpoint WF840) and after installing it, it seems to use no hot water. Checked all the obvious… yes we have hot water, its turned on, and it comes out of the machine end of the hose. Is this normal for this model?? Nothing was said at sale time about it being cold fill and in the instruction manual it talks about the “hot water temp must not be over 60 degrees”, “If you want to use it cold fill only you must buy an adapter” … etc.
Any advice greatfully received.
Thanks.August 9, 2004 at 11:52 am #114845Dave_Conway

You’ll almost certainly find that the machine only takes hot water from your system on washes 60C and above, maybe even the 60C only takes cold water.
Due to the low energy rating of these machines, it is far more efficient for the machine to heat and regulate the temperature itself, and yes, it’s quite normal. nearly all modern machines are the same.
Unless you have a supply of “free” hot water, it should be more cost effective letting the machine heat the water it uses.

Your Hotpoint WF840 does indeed take in hot water as and when it is required, usually only on the high temperature programmes though. Most 40degree washers these days will fill with 90{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} cold 10{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} hot (approx).

😈 We have even tried a 95 degree wash (“clean cycle”) and it still only took in cold. It did heat up to 95 mind you, as the door glass was too hot to touch.
I contacted Hotpoint who told me that it was realy cold fill but may use enough hot water to rinse out the soap tray on the wash part of the cycle. This doesn’t seem right to me as I have a hot water tank upstairs that has been heated by a very efficient gas boiler and I am having to heat up cold water by electricity as well!?! I thought the energy efficiency meant that it would use whatever it could get, hot water wise, and just tweak it as little as possible.
Am I expecting too much from this then??
Also the instalation instructions don’t say anywhere that we don’t need a hot supply and that we should make sure that the pipes are connected the right way round. A lady on the Hotpoint servicedesk suggested we swap over the pipes to see if it would then use the hot water!!! Hmm lovely hot washing at the end of the cycle …. I don’t think so!!!!So I suppose what I am ultimately asking is … is this a faulty machine or is it working as designed??
Thanks for your swift responses on this.

The latter in my opinion, although without seeing it, it’s impossible to be 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} on this.

What a lot of rubbish, and from Hotpoint too 😕
On a 95 degree cycle, the moment you press the ‘Start’ button, the machine will ‘pump’ for 5 seconds, (to clear the sump ball valve actually) It will then fill with ‘Cold’ water for approximately 15 seconds, THEN it should fill with HOT and continue until it has reached its preset water level (determined by the wash load you have selected)…The only exception to that being that if the incoming hot water IS TOO HOT, then it will fill with cold, until the temperature sensor has cooled down at least (*)
I recommend calling out one of their ‘engineers’ to check it out at least 😉
(*) I suspect a faulty thermistor sensor (IMHO)
Please advise us of the outcome…thanks 🙂

Keymaster‘test’ instead of program requested
My wf840 is going into ‘test’ everytime I try to use a program. How do I cancel this and just get on with using the machine? It is only 6 months old but I am unable to find the manual after searching for it.

I’m not familiar with this particular model, try holding the “start” button in for a few seconds 😉

if you accidently hold the start and on/off buttons it puts it into a test/demo mode. you need to push start and on/off again and “doff” should appear, you should now be able to use the appliance as normal. Abit bit of naff idea having the buttons that enter the test mode so close togehter if you ask me 🙄

KeymasterRe: Hotpoint washing machine – Size of problem
Sorry folks but the WF840 and all the later machines primarily fill with cold once they are filled if they req more water due to clthes soaking up water and a need to top up they will top up with hot then, but lately they have reverted to cold fill only resulting in no hot valve.

Hello Guest,
Thanks for your input. As you obviously have technical knowledge, please do us the courtesy of becoming a member. It is worth it.Regards,
