I’ve had 2 now which have remained unresolved because I don’t get given enough time for anything other than straight forward faults (which I hate) and sometimes other engineers get to fit the parts I order and I don’t get to find out what happened. (What a crap way to work)

Anyway, I had one months ago where the complaint was that once filled up with water on wash, instead of giving normal motor action it just turned the drum half heartedly for half a revolution and stopped. After a minute or two it did the same thing.

I looked at the job history and the 3 previous engineers had replaced the PCB and EEprom each time. Customer claimed it had cured the fault but it had returned within a few weeks.

I decided to fit a motor as well as the PCB and eeprom which cured the fault – but it apparently returned a few weeks after and the machine was exchanged.

The other day I had a Hotpoint WD dryer (less than a year old) and it was doing exactly the same thing except in addition it was washing for several hours – getting stuck on the wash. The heater wasn’t open circuit. I tried a motor which I understand can cause problems mid cycle and not give an error code, but it still stuck on wash (with the strange motor action) for over 4 hours without giving an error code. I tried a PCB and EEprom too but got a comunication error fault and couln’t clear it so had to refit the old one.

    Any clues anyone?

check motor harness for chaffing specially btm weight area also mtr plug
wma range had a few harness probs causes very similar fault

Thanks. I’ve tended not to check this area unless I get no motor action at all or a short.

I’m trying me best at Comet Martin. I gave up trying to make a living fixing them after 20 odd years 🙁

I mean, how much do you have to charge to fit a motor on a Hotpoint or Indesit – or PCB and Eeprom?

Ah yes, now I remember you saying a while back now 🙂

I quoted a landlord 2 weeks ago £190 to change Motor/Module/Stepper Timer as no way could I be sure as to the fault 😕

Quoting to fit the bl**dy lot was my only option otherwise I could be the loser due to “Merlonimisdiagnosis” (thats a virulent desease sweeping the service industry at the moment- by the way!) After all, Indesit engineers haven’t a clue and always throw parts at these lumps of tin and plastic every time. 🙄

I went to a machine (out of guarantee) last month where the lady had an army of different ‘Indesitters’ fixing her machine every other month whilst is was under guarantee. They left loads of unopened spares behind which she kept. When I told her the motor was shot she said “I’ll just get one from my stock then!” and she did, brand new motor unopened box. I fitting it….sorted :rotfl:

Well trust me there are parts fitters out there, does not have to be indesit-merloni. Know about BSH part fitter engineers. There are people who want to get in and get out, be at home by 2pm.

Re: Hotpoint washing machine strange motor action problem

I’d like to resurrect this posting. Yesterday I went to a Hotpoint WM420G, 1200rpm machine, just over 12 months old and out of guarantee, second time it’s gone wrong, first time under warranty. The customer took a gamble and decided to call me out rather than claim on his “free” parts warranty. The drum works fine on both slow and fast spin cycles, but will not reverse tumble as normal during the wash cycle. Just a half-hearted third of a turn of the drum every now and again.

The motor and tacho winding resistnaces all measure OK (although the two stator halves have different resistances of 0.5 and 0.8 Ohm respectively – not sure if this is OK). Rotor resistances are around 2.5 Ohms all round, tacho around 200 Ohm. The power module looks fine – no signs of overheating or water damage.

I concluded it must be the power module, which I’ve agreed to order for the customer, but have now seen this thread, and fear I may have opened a can of worms. Perhaps I may need the EEPROM, wiring loom part or motor instead.

I could refer the customer to Hotpoint, but want to pursue it as I’d like to know the answer for next time. Has anyone gained more experience of this issue over the last six months since the last posting?

Are you sure about that model number, cannot see it on Partfinder?

Is it a washer dryer WD420G?

Re: Hotpoint washing machine strange motor action problem

    Silly me, yes washer/dryer WD420G.

As an aside, I’ve just received Hotpoint’s new prices from 1 Jan 2006 – the module comes down in price by 5{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} and the EEPROM by 50{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}! Perhaps that says something about how many of these particular components they are selling!

Had a couple doing this i’ve rewrote the eeprom and seems to cure, dont know why but it seems to work a couple were connected via 3 way adapters feeding dishwasher etc another in an old cottage beginning to think a dodgy supply may screw up the eeprom,

Re: Hotpoint washing machine strange motor action problem

Thanks Johnny, I’ll try a new pre-programmed EEPROM first then, but take a new module as well just in case.

How do you re-prgramme the EEPROM, by the way? I assume you need the Indesit hardware key, as shown on Partfinder, but do you need special Hotpoint software as well, presumably regularly updated? Is that software available outside the Hotpoint service network?

Re: Hotpoint washing machine strange motor action problem

johnnyj is at the moment a Hotpoint/Indesit engineer. Unfortunately none of this equipment or software is available to the independant trade but there are some people working on a solution. 😉

Re: Hotpoint washing machine strange motor action problem

I returned to the appliance today, equipped with WD420G EEPROM (part no 1604952 for hot and cold fill) and power module (C00108933), as identified from the latest Partfinder release.

I took the old board out – but there was no removable EEPROM to replace! I then swapped the whole board, but the machine wouldn’t work at all (several fascia lights lit up and the programme wouldn’t start). I put the old board back in and the machine was “restored” to its old half-hearted drum action on wash.

I rang Hotpoint parts, and they went through a whole series of old and new part numbers, depending on the code label on the module cover. These were from a technical notice not included on the current release of Partfinder. The module fitted to the machine I was working on was apparently not listed, so they were unable to identify the correct replacement parts for this machine. The new one I had obtained certainly had a different code number from the original.

It seems the information on Partfinder may be incorrect, and/or not cover every production variant. Has anyone else come across this type of issue with Partfinder?

Meanwhile, my customer decided to “cut his losses” and get a new machine, as he didn’t want any further delay in getting it fixed. He was clearly annoyed though at scrapping a £400 machine after just one year, and won’t buy Hotpoint again (although it transpired in conversation Indesit was still firmly in the running!)

He offered to pay for my time, which I turned down, as I was content to “cut my losses” also, and not get dragged into an onging saga. Now the heat is off, I will pursue with Hotpoint to try to understand what went wrong.

All together now, 😥 every issue of PF is full of holes and always has been.
