    Hi,

I have a fault with a hotpoint WD420P washer/dryer, i believe the serial number is 37104161 (inside of door). The machine is just over 2 years old

I’ve had the top off and run the dryer cycle, the metal heater box gets very hot but the inside of the drum doesn’t really heat up. At the back end of this heater box is a coil wound unit which i assume is the fan, this seems to be running but slowly and makes a slight ticking noise so i guess there is a fault with this. How fast/noisy should the fan run when drying? The reistance accross the 2 pins on this unit is 55.5 ohms.

If this is the fault wheres the best place to get a replacement unit and how much will it cost?

Also is there a filter that should be cleared of fluff on this machine? I can’t seem to find one….

    Thanks

    Steve

You may be able to refit the fan, they often come loose. This Indesit designed heater box has had numerous modifications already, later type has a metal fan to replace the plastic one that yours will have. The fan is secured by a left hand threaded nut.

    Thanks Jim,

Is the fan likely to have come completely off and need a new fan and or nut to secure it or just loose and slipping?

Is it worth replacing the fan motor at the same time? is it the top one on this page http://www.4hotpoint.co.uk/cgi-bin/search.pl?query=wd420p+motor

does this require complete removal of the heater box? Do you know what size the torx bit required is?

What modified heater boxes are available and is it worth fitting one of these rather than trying to fix the old one?

Re: Hotpoint WD420P, dryer does not work

The left handed thread Jim was refering to tightens a collet on the fan shaft. Notorious for slipping and allowing the fan to contact the heater housing. (hence the ticking noise).
Firstly, POWER OFF. Remove the top half of the heater chamber. Turn upside down to view the fan blade. Spin the fan by hand, if it’s badly out of round, a replacement is the only answer. If it runs reasonably true, undo the collet nut, reposition and tighten the fan. Refit the fan chamber and test.
The photo you have highlighted is of the fan MOTOR not the blade. If you say it’s ticking, then the motor should be running and O.K. To obtain the correct fan blade, click the ‘Shop @’ banner.
If you are at all unsure how to progress, click the ‘Repairs @’ banner for an engineer in your area.

Power off before any inspection. :plug:

Re: Hotpoint WD420P, dryer does not work

    Hi,

    Bit of an update:

Looks like i’ve fixed the problem, I took the heater box off from the drum and the fan looked good, it span freely and wasn’t loose. I powered it up and the fan span quickly and pushed lots of warm air out of the end of the box, so i’m happy that the fan and heater element are ok for now.

What i did find was a filter at the end of the box that was clogged with fluff:

    Cleaned it up :

refitted the heater box and the drum gets warm again 😀

Looks like the clogged filter was stopping the fan from drawing air into the heater box

That filter was removed on the second modification, then put back again on the latest one.

All round not the best dryer setup in the current crop of washer/dryers.

    Jim.
