Hotpoint WD440 G – flashing lights, fails to drain

A problem has just recently occured on my 18 month old Hotpoint WD440.

Basically, after I ran a D programme at 40 degrees, after it presumably finished:

– the on/off button was flashing
– the Reduced Creases (2nd bottom down) and Time Saver (4th bottom) were flashing
– the door was locked for some time
– the detergent drawer (left hand compartment) did not dispense during the wash
– a motor (i think connected to detergent drawer) was still running but the drum was not

when i managed to get the door open after switching the appliance off at teh mains, it turned out that the water had not drained (maybe indicating teh programme didnt finish?). Therefore, i check the filter, drain pipe for any blockages but did not find any.

What could be teh problem? The electrics or drain pump perhaps? Do you recommend that i get Hotpoint to come out? I believe its £89 labour and free parts from reading on.

Any help would be much appreciated

Fault code F05. Pressure switch stuck on full. Likely cause is a blockage or obstruction in in the pump itself if the filter cage is clear.

is it easy enough to disconnect the drain pump and check / clear the drain pump and replace if necessary?

bearing in my mind i have already managed to clear the filter (thats the level at expertise that I am at!!)

Not to difficult, make sure the mains plug is out first, place a few towels on the floor. Pump will split if you cannot remove any objects from the inlet/outlet of the pump. Usual culprits, broken bra wires, hair bobbles, hair grips, etc. be sure to pull the filter right out of the rubber sump hose, anything down the side will cause this problem as well.

cheers for all the help Jim.

Just done as you have suggested and was surprised how easy it was. There was an eyelet and tough material attached stuck in the pump but managed to safely remove it by opening it up.

Heopfully this will rectify the problem – just running a test wash through now so will let you know how it goes!!

New problem has now occurred since I did the fix last Thursday.

Everything went according to plan and we managed to perform 3 wash programs with everything going ok.

Saturday morning, i ran the drying programme for 90 minutes. When i came back home, all the electricity was off and i narrowed this down to the washing machine.

What will be the cause of the machine breaking the circuit bearing in mind my recent ‘repair’.

I am not sure when during the cycle it occured but it seemed to be at the end as the clothes were dry and still warm.

..by the way i have checked the connections at the back, replaced the 13AMP fuse in the plug but the same problem occurs.

i havent disconnected the pump again as to be honest i would not know what i would be looking for

If the machine did three washes after you cleared the pump then as long as there is no sign of a leak this could just be a coincidence. The only way to be certain is to check all the components with a multimeter or meggar for short circuit or earth leakage.

it was actually 2 washes, come to think of it.

there is slight damp patch on the floor but cant see any visible signs of leakage around the drain pump and drain pipe. My concern is that the area in the machine (and indeed the coils on the pump) would have been wet from when i had to solve the original problem.

would it be worthwhile disconnecting the pump again to check this (or perhaps check something else??)

All I can suggest is that you look very carefully for any sign of leaks, a blast with a hair dryer will often be enough to dry out anything you may have accidentally got wet.
