    HOTPOINT WD440 ON/OFF light Flashing

had a problem this morning where the WD440 would not turn on at all… anyway.. after leaving it an hour or so tried it again and now it turns on ok..

HOWEVER.. The on/off light flashes.. (pulsing)

The other LED’s on the left side flash slowly (top 2 LED’s) 1st Led, Drying High heat and the 2nd one down is Reduce Creases.

    Any Ideas??

UPDATE – -i have just uploaded a Video of the machine showing the fault onto YouTube so you can see extactly what i mean. (pictures explain a thousand words!!

Fault code is F12. A communications error. your machines PCB’s have fallen out and are not on speaking terms. 😥

Could just be loose contacts or broken wiring, on the other hand it could be a failure of either PCB with the main power module the more likely candidate.

Do bear in mind that you should be covered for parts for five years.

Be sure to pull the mains pulg if you go inside.

    Jim.

Edit. Just had a look at the video, nice work, couldn’t hear you cursing the machine though. 😉 8)

    Thanks for the reply Iadom,

In regards to the circuit boards.. do you have any advice inregards to problem solving?

I am going to take it about tommrrow and check all wiring etc, do you have any pointers to the areas i should be looking at or know of any tests which can be carried out?

I have called Hotpoint today and they advised as the machine is 2 years old i can take an extended warrenty package out for £149 which they will repair the machine and provide 12 months warrenty on all parts and labour, or another option of £89 for labour only for investigating this issue.

I would like to attemp to sort it myself so any information you can share would be great.

(Im glad you liked the video.. thats the edited version where i had put the large sledge hammer away and cur the verable abuse i was calling it!! 🙂 )

    Thanks for reading

Re: HOTPOINT WD440 ON/OFF light Flashing

Apart from physically checking all the wiring connections there is little else you can do. There is a port low down at the back that the Indesit/Hotpoint company engineers use to plug in their laptops, to fault diagnose and if need be reprogram the eeprom. Unfortunately they will not release this software to the independent trade. Don’t mess around to much in your understandable attempt to fix it yourself, the electronics on these machines since Indesit took over are very unreliable to say the least.

Difficult call, for £149.00 you will be paying £60.00 more than the standard labour charge of £89.00 and you will not be getting 12 months parts and labour cover , you will be getting 12 months labour only, the dammed parts are covered for five years anyhow. :rolls: On our ISE machine you can get five years parts & labour for £60.00. The £89.00 will be for completing the repair , all parts are free. Unless it is almost five years old then I would go for the labour only option.

Thanks for your inout.. I will have a look tommrrow and check the basics out.. however i reckon it will be a board error… it always is with stuff like this these days!!

My Parents used a guy a year or so back and he charges a £20 call out fee and first hour or so.. + parts,

If it was not a washer dryer i would just go out and buy a new one as you can pick a cheap washer up for around £200 now.. but as its a dryer its a bit too much to go down that route!

thanks again and i will post an update of my findings plus the resolve once sorted for future cases..

    cheers

Rick , with the greatest of respect, that is the sort of thing that the manufacturers of the current low end washing machines want you to do.

I did six calls this morning, five of them on Hotpoint machines ranging from 17 to 21 years old. All repaired successfully, the dearest one was a bearing change, at around £65.00, all will last for several years yet with luck.

One thing they all had in common, almost 20 years ago these machines cost between £200 & £350. At todays prices around £750 to £1000.

Do yourself, your wallet and the ‘Planet’ 😉 a big favour and buy a decent quality machine next time. A good machine will last you at least 10 years, will break down far less and in a ten year period you could save around £600. It is not rocket science, it is just a case of trying to educate people to change attitudes from the live for today, throw it away mentality that has pervaded the world in which we live.

As far as domestic appliances go, the adage, you only get what you pay for has never been more apposite. With washing machines there is no such thing as ‘cheap & cheerful’ the low end machines are all cheap & nasty. 😥

Re: HOTPOINT WD440 ON/OFF light Flashing

i know what you mean.. you get what you pay for… However when i got my WD440, i was not the cheapest option.. and in fairness i thought it “ok” for price etc.. The fact is i got that and matching fridge for my first home so i could of got a lot worse!!

    Anyway… back on topic…

If it is a board failure, i have been looking online and these seem to be around the £90 mark from Part master… however i got have a part number as yet so i could of been looking at the wrong part!! (and i know.. Part master is not the cheapest around but its ok as a guide at this stage.. )

The problem i have tho now is if i get hotpoint out it will cost me £89 for a basic labour repair, part replaced under warrenty.

FOR EXAMPLE – If the part was £90 – i run the risk of buying that and fitting it myself and that not been the issue..

Or going for the HOTPOINT £149 cover…

If i think of it this way….. part costs £90 same as call out… offset that price againest the £149, that means in theory for an Extra £60 i get 12 months parts & labour cover on the full machine.. £60 over 12 months £5 a month.. not bad for a piece of mind…

i will have a think tommrrow and take it from there!

Re: HOTPOINT WD440 ON/OFF light Flashing

As I said, your £60.00 is giving you 12 months labour only, the parts are already under warranty until the machine is five years old.

The £149.00 is not giving you 12 months parts & labour. 😥

    Right..

Hotpoint came out and sorted the problem..

As i posted the question up on the forum and i thought i will give you the resolve for future cases!

A control board had failed so this was replaced and the issue is now long gone!!

PART NUMBER – C00143056 – (on the box)

    On the part its self..

    JABIL Circuit. 21500 8184 00

    Mine has a date sticker of Week/Anno 44/ 2004

If you require any more info or a photo of the part let me know.

Thanks for getting back to us to confirm the fault.

Image link not working, you need to host them somewhere like Putfile or Image Shack, but most of us are sick of the sight of Indesit PCB’s anyway. 😥

Looking at them reminds of the rouges gallery on Crimewatch, ” have you seen any of these undesirable specimens” the answer is a resounding “yes” far to often for my liking, so much so that I sometimes do have nightmares. 😥
