ParticipantHi,
I have an Hotpoint WD440 and when I came home this evening I discovered that we had had a powercut.
When the power came on the machine was making a loud buzzing noise. None of the lights that can be used for diagnostics are lit but the ‘Door Locked’ light is lit.
The machine looks to have stopped part way through a wash (the clothes inside are sat in water) and if I try to select any wash program, there is a very loud buzzing noise and nothing else happens. If I select cancel the buzzing stops.
I have tried leaving the machine powered off at the socket but this makes no difference.
What is the next stage for diagnosing a fix.
Many thanks,

Remove the mains plug and check the main pcb in the base for any obvious signs of damage.

Hi,
I have removed the board it is an MK4. I can’t see any obvious signs of any issues, non of the capacitors appear to be leaking.
Components R20 and C10 appear to be very ‘dirty’, these are close to D9 which looks different from its counter part D7. Please see the attached picture.
Thanks,

Nothing obvious from that picture, checking the motor brushes and commutator, drain pump and door interlock next possible steps.

Hi,
1) Motor brushes and commutator – I have taken the motor out and looked at these they seem to move freely with little resistance, the brushes seem to be in good condition and remain in contact with the commutator which doesn’t have any visible signs of damage (picture attached). Are there any other checks I can perform to the motor?
2) Drain pump – do you mean drain the pump and check for any blockages? Or check the drain pump for issues? Is there a good guide so I can check this?
3) If I remove the interlock, what electrical tests can I do to confirm that is/isn’t faulty?
Many thanks,

Check pump for obstructions, no practical tests you can really do on door lock.
Can you not identify the area of the loud noise?
I did have one recently, a much newer machine doing a similar thing and that turned out to be the pcb sadly.
